Beginning May 16 we will begin a new project for all of you paper crafters.

On May 16 we will be creating plaster molds. We will begin by custom designing your own creation, carve it out of clay and cast it in plaster. We will walk through step-by-step of the process from beginning to end.

On May 20 we will begin the second phase of the project. This will consist of making our own paper pulp and casting pulp in our plaster molds. I will include ideas for projects as well as directions.

Paper casting is really a unique experience. Paper is such a versatile medium. Even after you cast it in your mold, allow it to dry, paint, stain or varnish it, it is still paper. Because of this it can be cut easily with scissors at any time throughout the artistic process.

They can also be sewn. This is a concept that many overlook. You can make a tiny handmade tile and sew it to the front of a greeting card or stitch several together. Along this same line is lacing. You can create a framework and lace the design to suspend from the framework.

While you are exploring the ideas remember as it is paper, another process that can be incorporated is tearing. Tearing gives a very organic, unstructured finish that cannot be copied with other processes.

Explore and try new ideas and create new steps of your own.

When you finish your own projects, e-mail me with the results. I love to hear from you all.
