I was recently asked if it is possible to make an Elmo costume with no sewing only a glue gun. The answer is yes.

You don’t have to be an expert seamstress to make a costume.

Materials needed:

  • Red fur ( size will vary depending on the child but about two yards)
  • Velcro ( about 4 inches)
  • Ribbon (about 2 feet)
  • Ping pong balls -4
  • Black permanent marker
  • Orange permanent marker
  • Scissors
  • Glue gun
  • Glue sticks
  • Plastic pumpkin tote

It is trickier with a glue gun but possible. You will need a couple of yards of red fur. Get a pajama sleeper that you know fits them and lay it on the doubled fabric. Cut the fabric around the sleeper larger than the sleeper and very large throughout the belly. Hot glue the pieces together right sides facing and cut a slit down the back for an opening to get into the costume. Hot glue velcro to close the back after it is on. A hat is trickier. You can try measuring from jaw across the head to the other jaw and from the front of the head to the crown for the first piece. The other piece will be a circle with a flat bottom for the back of the hat. Hot glue these and add a tie with ribbon and hot glue. For a basket to carry I bought a dollar store pumpkin bucket and covered it with red fur using hot glue. I then bought ping pong balls and used an orange marker to color two of them. I used a black marker to make the eyes by coloring a nickel sized circle on four balls. I then hot glued two eyes to the hat and two to the bucket. I hot glued an orange nose to the hat and one on the bucket. That's it.
