It's that time of year when the stores are filled with plastic bags of Easter basket grass.

You have all seen them. The bins are full of green, yellow and pink plastic fake grass for decorating Easter baskets. Isn't it funny that plastic strings have become tradition because it's what we all had when we were children.

Like all traditions, at some point it should be challenged. Traditions are almost sacred but the truth is there are times when the reason for the tradition has passed but we continue the process because it is tradition with a capital 'T'. When I was a child the bags of plastic grass were all that was available. No one came up with a better idea that was cost effective so it continued.

In today's world we not only have other options we also need to consider the environment. There is nothing green living about those bags of grass except the dye used to make them. When you think about the millions of bags of those plastic strings sold each year do you ever wonder what happens to all of them after Easter?

Today many people have shredders in the home they use for mail. Shredders can also be used to make Easter grass. Paper is biodegradable and can be used in all different colors and shades to make the foundation of our Easter celebration. Instead of just three color options we now have a limitless choice of color combinations.

Another choice is fabric. Cut strips of fabric for texture and color. Use them for Easter and then use them after Easter for rug making.

Get creative and enjoy the fact that you are not stuck with only one option.
