Are you itching to get your hands in the garden but live in the northern zones? Here is a craft project that will let you get a jump on the garden.

In a hurry to get the garden started but the weather too cold? For those of us living in the northern zones, planting season is still weeks away. Many gardeners make a box with a hinged transparent lid to lay over the ground to get their seeds in the ground sooner and get a longer growing season. In this way the sun and warmth stay in but the frost and cold stay out. Here is a quick and easy project to get you started early.

Bed Gardens

I used an old wooden window. Beneath it I created a lumber box the dimensions of the window. I then attached hinges to one side of the window and box. Now the light and heat go in but the cold and frost stay out and I am able to start my garden much sooner. I also had a couple of window frames that were missing the glass. I covered these with bubble wrap and they were wonderful. This will diffuse the light but still allow it to pass thru the surface.

Container Gardens

If you don't have the room for beds but do container gardening here is a craft project that will allow you the ability to get some out your deck plants started early.

  • Materials Needed:
  • 8x8 pot -size can be different but you must adjust picture frame size also.
  • 1 8x10 picture frame
  • Potting soil
  • Seeds of your choice
  • Bubble wrap
  • Clear packing tapeUsing potting soil, plant seeds in the pot as directed. Water. Tape bubble wrap onto the frame. Place the picture frame over top of the pot. Put pot in a sunny spot and watch it grow. Don't forget to water occasionally.Another trick for a small quantity of seeds going directly into the garden is to place baby food jars (or any other kind of clear glass jar) over the seeds once planted and watered."Copyright 2006, Mary Welling-Bonney & Suite 101.
