You have all heard of living "Green". It just means being more environmentally conscious in our everyday lives.
Can we craft green? Yes we can and yes it can make a difference for the environment and our wallet. This is the time of year when many people are sorting through the old to bring in all of the new items Christmas acquired. We donate old clothing and give away the mixer that has been upgraded. As you are sorting through items, always keep your crafting in mind. If you are a knitter and only knit, this will be easy for you. If you are a scrap booker, quilter, or just love creating things this one is for you. It is simple. You will need a designated space. Many people have a trash can and recycle can. You can add one more can just for craft recycling. When you have sorted through the clothing you are donating to the local resale shop you will have clothing that has stains or tears that you throw away instead. Look these over before throwing them away. Do they have zippers, buttons, labels, or embellishments that could be reused? Many artists get their canvases from people getting rid of outdated prints. They are easily primed over. Some with texture can be sanded first or keep the texture as an added element to the new painting. Baby formula cans and baby food jars come in handy. Scrap booking alone has so many little embellishments that it can be difficult to find the one you are looking for if they aren't organized. Before you get rid of an old double boiler, think if you know anyone who is a candle maker? They are a great method for melting paraffin. You never want to use a pan that's also used for food. You have an old blender that would be great for paper making. Just like the double boiler, you don't want to use a kitchen blender that will be used for food. Do you struggle with a gift for a teen girl? Plan now. Every time she gets rid of something, cut out the label. Labels are big with kids. When it gets to be November, make her a quilt by attaching all of the designer labels to different quilt squares. Computer crafting generates a lot of paper. Keep your draft sheets in a box and use the other sides before throwing them out. With it being resolution time, maybe we can add a resolution to enjoy our crafts while looking out for our world.
