Every year we get to this time and the stress of coming up with a Valentine's Day gift he will really like begins to loom.

This gift is for the sport lovers man room. We will be making throw pillows and floor pillows that boast his favorite team's logo or team name.

This is another one of our green projects. This one contains recycling of used clothing.

This project requires numerous sport team sweatshirts. This calls for a trip to your local resale store. Plan on one sweatshirt per throw pillow and a minimum of four for each of the floor pillows. If you have the time and resources you can purchase an additional twelve shirts and add a quilt throw using the same concepts that we use for the throw pillows. The only difference would be to sew a layer of batting and skip the stuffing.

Throw Pillows

Materials Needed:

  • One sweatshirt per pillow with a minimum of four
  • Polyfill
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Sewing machine
  • Pen
  • Needle and Thread

The pillows do not need to match. It is actually better if they don't. This is for him after all.

The size of the sweatshirt you purchased will dictate the finished size of the pillow. If you found the shirts in small and 3x, these pillows are going to vary in size greatly. Allowing variety will increase the aesthetic interest.

Use your measuring tape to find the largest square you can achieve on the front of the shirt. Mark the edges with your pen. Cut out your square shape from the front of the sweatshirt. Using this piece as your guide cut the square shape again but this time from the back of the sweatshirt.

Sew these two pieces together with right sides facing. Leave an opening to turn the pillow inside right. Turn and stuff. Hand stitch the opening closed. You can give them as is or embellish them in team colors. Just keep any embellishment simple and minimal. You do not want to end up with frilly pillows.

Repeat for each pillow.

Floor Pillow

Begin the same as you did for the throw pillow by cutting out your square. The difference is you are going to do this for at least four sweatshirts. You can add more if you want your floor pillow extra large. Just add them so that whenever you add a row to the side, you also add a row to the bottom. This will keep your floor pillow square.

Sew the four backs together by sewing two with wrong sides out. Next sew the other two wrong sides out. Now open up the two sets you just sewed and sandwich them with wrong sides out and sew up one long side.

You are going to repeat the same process for the top of our floor pillow. If the shirts were in different colors, you may want to make sure the colors match up to their backing. It helps to lay these out on the table. You are going to also need to make sure the logos or team names are all facing upright. When you have them laid out the way you want them fold the top square over the bottom square on each side. Mark the top of the two wrong side up squares. This is the side for you to sew. One at a time sew this seam to join two pieces.

Now open the pieces up and lay them back out in the correct pattern. Now fold over the left panel onto the right with wrong side up. Mark the left edge on the wrong side that is showing. This is the seam to sew. Make sure to leave an opening for turning and stuffing.

Finish off the same as we did for the throw pillow. Turn, stuff, and hand stitch.

Happy Valentine's Day!
