Dollar Store Decor for Outdoor Spaces
Deck or Patio Decorating for Under $60
Many families treat their deck or patio area as an extension of their home, used for relaxation and entertaining. Like any room on the inside of the house, outdoor spaces are more enjoyable when they are well-decorated. Giving an outdoor living space a facelift doesn’t have to be expensive. With a little ingenuity and a few basic arts and crafts skills, an outdoor space can be transformed with items found at the dollar store. These projects will give any outdoor space an entirely new look for $60 or less!
Outdoor Rug - $25
Define outdoor dining spaces by placing an area rug underneath the picnic table or patio dining set.
Repurposing straw placemats is a great way to create a custom outdoor rug for cheap.
Supplies:
- 20 straw placemats (look for placemats that are sturdy and seem like they will hold up well over time)
- Fishing line
- Sewing needle
Directions:
- Choose placemats that are all the same color, or choose several coordinating colors to create a pattern.
- If making a pattern, arrange the placemats first to be certain that you are satisfied with the arrangement before sewing them together.
- Use clear fishing line and a sewing needle to attach the placemats along all of the edges where they meet. Sew along each seam several times to ensure durability.
- Place the finished rug on your deck or patio and place outdoor dining furniture on top of it.
The addition of the outdoor rug should immediately add a more homey feeling to the outdoor space. The number of placemats needed will depend on the dimensions of your table and the dimensions of the placemats you choose. An average-sized area rug should take about 20 placemats, arranged 4 x 5.
Outdoor Chandelier - $25
Continue enjoying outdoor spaces well into the evening by adding some soft lighting. Tiki torches and candles are popular options, but for those looking for something more elegant and unique, try creating an outdoor chandelier instead. This project also uses flameless tea lights, eliminating the risk of fire.
Supplies:
- 12 glass candle holders or other small glassware that flares outward at the top
- Tissue paper
- Decoupage medium
- Twine
- Round wire cooling rack
- 12 flameless tea light candles
Directions:
- Tear tissue paper into small pieces and use decoupage medium to attach them to the outside of the candle holders. Cover the outside of the candle holder entirely, then seal it with several more layers of decoupage medium.
- Once the decoupage medium has dried, tie varying lengths of twine to the candle holders. Tie the twine tightly around the top of the candle holders; the flare should keep the twine in place and prevent it from slipping off of the candle holders.
- A round cooling rack for baking makes an ideal base, but many other objects will work. Tie each candle holder to the base so that they hang at varied lengths.
- Tie several additional lengths of twine to the outside edges of the base and gather them, knotting them together about 10 inches above the base. This will create a way to hang the chandelier.
- Insert a flameless tea light into each candle holder. Many dollar stores carry these flame-free alternatives in packages of two or four, making them not only safe but affordable as well.
- Hang the finished chandelier from a tree branch, a plant hook, or a wherever is appropriate in the outdoor space.
Alternatively, baby food jars or other small jars could be recycled in place of store-bought candle holders, making this project even more inexpensive!
Plastic Bowl Urn Planters - $10
No outdoor space is complete without planters. Planters are easy and cheap to make yourself out of many different objects, including plastic bowls.
Supplies:
- 4 large plastic bowls
- 4 slightly smaller plastic bowls
- Glue
- Drill
- Stone-look spray paint
Directions:
- Place the small bowls upside-down and place the larger bowls on top of them, them glue the bottoms of the bowls together.
- Use a drill to make a drainage hole that goes through the center of both bowls.
- Paint the assembled urns with stone-look spray paint or crackle finish spray paint to give them a finished, classy look.
- All that remains is to add some dirt and plant some pretty flowers!
There are unlimited possibilities for the random items sold at dollar stores. Use these ideas as inspiration and remember that with a little innovation, there are thousands of simple ways to decorate without spending much money!
