Nothing beats the toothy grin of a jack-o-lantern, the traditionally carved pumpkin. Sure, there are many pumpkin carving patterns out there but especially when carving a pumpkin for the first time, many Halloween lovers opt for the traditional pumpkin face because it is easy and customary. In fact, pumpkin carving can be turned into a fun Halloween project for the whole family.
Getting Organized – Tools Needed for Pumpkin Carving
First of all, decide where to carve the pumpkin – in the kitchen, the garden, the garage or somewhere else. In either case, some newspaper is essential to protect floors and surfaces and to remove the pumpkin guts quickly afterward. Here’s what else is needed for pumpkin carving:
- a round, medium-sized pumpkin
- a large spoon or ice-cream scoop
- a sharp knife with a thin blade
- a pen, marker or crayon
- old newspapers
- two bowls
Getting Started – Cutting the Top Out
The knife is crucial for this step and should be one that is sharp and has a thin blade. Remember that the top of the pumpkin will serve as a lid later on, so some precautions should be taken when cutting it out:
- Make sure the hole is about two-thirds the diameter of the pumpkin to allow for enough space to reach in and scoop it out.
- Cut around the stem of the pumpkin in a circle or a hexagon. The latter might be easier because straight lines are easier to carve than curves.
- Angle the knife when cutting the top so that the lid and hole will be slightly cone-shaped. This way, the lid won’t fall into the pumpkin.
- Cut off the bottom part of the lid; it needs to be only about a few inches thick.
Gutting a Pumpkin
Now for the fun part: taking the pumpkin seeds and membrane out. This is the messiest part of pumpkin carving that many instructions skip. Children either love or hate dealing with the slimy pumpkin guts but this is a good way for them to learn that it is all part of the pumpkin carving process. Here are some tips:
- With a spoon or an ice-cream scoop, start gutting the pumpkin top to bottom. A smaller spoon may work better in the beginning when there is less space to work with.
- Separate the pumpkin seeds in one bowl and the stringy membrane in another. Keeping the pumpkin guts in plastic bowls rather than on the newspaper will prevent soaking and will keep your work space clean while carving.
- Use a larger spoon as you move down.
- In case the pumpkin turns out harder to gut than expected because the inside is not soft, this might be because the pumpkin is not ripe yet. If there is time, let it ripen; otherwise carefully cut out hard parts with the knife.
Carving the Jack-o-Lantern Face
Now, for the real fun part: carving the pumpkin’s face. First, inspect the surface of the pumpkin and pick the smoothest side for carving. Decide on the type of face everyone likes – square eyes versus triangular ones, square teeth versus sharp teeth, etc.
- Draw the face on the pumpkin surface with a pen or crayon.
- Then cut out the pieces along the lines drawn.
- Carefully push out the pieces when done.
- Inspect the finished face and make adjustments as needed.
Pumpkin Carving Tips
Now that the jack-o-lantern is finished, decide where it is supposed to sit and watch over the house – lit up jack-o-lanterns are said to act as protection against mean spirits. Then place a candle, tea light or any other kind of light inside and you are done. Before starting to carve your pumpkin, make sure to read the following pumpkin carving tips carefully:
- Pick a pumpkin that is uniformly orange, indicating it is ripe.
- Pick a sharp knife for carving, even when carving with children as blunt knives are more dangerous. Surprised? Blunt knives require more pressure and if they slip and cut a person, the cut tends to be deeper and not as clean.
- Scrape the pumpkin bottom out flat so that the candle or light can stand properly.
- Don’t just throw the pumpkin guts and seeds away – roast the seeds as a tasty snack and use the guts in a recipe that requires pumpkin.
