Store-bought decorations are lovely and can make a Christmas tree look fantastic. But there is also much fun in hanging homemade ornaments and they lend a sweet personal touch to a tree. These suggestions are good Christmas activities for the whole family.
Miniature Christmas tree
Miniature Christmas trees made from pine cones are an easy and fun craft and a great activity for kids. Gather pine cones before heavy snowfalls and allow them to dry inside. Most pine cones are the perfect shape to represent a Christmas tree. Glue both ends of a length of string to the tip of the pine cone so that it makes a loop. Dab the pine cone with colourful fabric paint to make the green pines and the colourful tree ornaments. It would work best to paint one side only, allow it to dry, then turn it over and paint the other side.
Hanging Picture frame
The hanging picture gives a great personal touch to a Christmas tree. Print a good portrait. On cardstock, trace and cut one square and one square that is hollowed out. Decorate the hollowed out square with desired items such as beads, sparkle glue, paint, seashells, pipe cleaners, tinsel, assorted puzzle pieces. Glue the picture to the plain square. Glue both ends of a short string to the top of the square so that it makes a loop. Glue the decorated square on the front of the picture so that it completes the frame and hides the ends of the string. The frame can also be made circular.
Popcorn String Tinsel
A popcorn string to wrap around the tree is an old favourite and easily made. It may take quite a bit of popping corn but the end result is a fun time and an interesting edible decoration. The amount of popcorn to be made depends on the desired length of tinsel. Tie thread or thing string through a needle. Using the point of the needle to thread it, gently push the popcorn a piece at a time onto the string until it is the desired length.
Be sure to leave room on both ends of the string to tie a knot on each end. The popcorn can be left plain or decorated with glitter to make it sparkle like tinsel. Once the ends are tied, the popcorn string is ready to be wrapped around the tree.
Pasta Angel
This fun decoration takes a bit of the pasta out of the pantry, but makes a nice addition to the tree ornaments. A pasta angel will take penne, bow ties and small shells. Use a piece of penne as the body of the angel and glue a shell on one end for the angel’s head. Glue a bow tie to one side of the penne to represent wings and the angel is complete. The angel can be decorated with glitter or paint to make it colourful and unique.
