Here is a fun ornament to make for the whole family. Make sets to give as gifts or let each child make their own using the colors they choose.

These ornaments are a cute little painted and stamped canvas suspended in the center of a silver frame. They make a great accent for your tree or make them for gifts.

Materials Needed:

  • Half-inch wooden dowel rod
  • Hacksaw
  • Silver wire
  • Silver spray paint
  • Canvas (4" x 8")
  • Snowflake stamper (3")
  • Blue paint
  • White paint
  • Paint brush
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Silver embroidery floss
  • Wire Cutters
  • Iron

Preparation

  1. Cut the wooden dowel into four 6" pieces for each ornament. Spray paint the dowels silver on all sides. It may mean doing a side and waiting for it to dry before turning the dowels and spraying again. Repeat until the dowels are covered.
  2. Wire the dowel pieces into a square by overlapping the corners a half inch and winding wire in and out of the intersection until the corner is secure. Repeat for each corner.
  3. Fold the canvas fabric in half and stitch all the way around leaving an opening for turning. Turn the fabric right side out and iron the fabric flat. Hand stitch the opening closed.
  4. Paint the canvas blue. You can make this two sided by repeating the painting on the reverse side once the first side dries. When all of the paint is dry, pour some of the white paint into a shallow dish. Dip your stamper into the white paint. Try stamping on scrap paper or newspaper first so you can get an idea of how much paint you will need on your stamper. When you get consistent results stamp the center of the blue canvas. Once dry repeat on the reverse side

Assembly

  1. Lay out the square on a flat surface. The canvas should fit in the center with room to spare.
  2. Using your needle and silver embroidery floss, lace stitch the canvas onto the dowels all the way around.
  3. Decide whether you want the square to hang as a diamond or straight up as a square. This will determine where your hanger will go.
  4. Using an eight inch piece of silver embroidery floss knot it on the corner to hang as a diamond or in the center of a dowel to hang level.

Try different stampers and colors of paint. Make a set for each child's teacher and let the kids help.

You can also change up the fabric and use different colors of felt. This will save you the first fabric painting step. You can even have the kids cut out felt snowflakes and glue them onto the colored felt save a few steps and have a project with less mess involved. You can let them embellish their snowflakes with buttons, glitter, cottonballs or sequins. Use your leftover scraps of yarn to add a flair.
