It's not just for classrooms anymore! Chalkboard paint is easy to use and readily available. There are tons of crafts that use chalkboard paint, so get creative!

Chalkboard paint is durable and erasable, making it great for craft projects and home decorating ideas. Remember that several coats may be necessary and it's very important to let the paint dry fully before applying a new coat. It takes a little longer than regular paint, but it's well worth it.

Most chalkboard paints are available in traditional black or green, but it's easy to make if a different color is required. Simply mix a cup of latex paint in the color of your choice and mix with two tablespoons of unsanded tile grout. You may have to play around with the amounts a little bit to get the desired consistency. Start with small amounts until you get the hang of it. (Thanks to marthastewart.com for this recipe!)

Use it all over the house for different craft projects. There are tons of things you can do, so grab a brush (or spray can) and get painting.

Chalkboard Paint for the Table

Coasters

  • Take regular glass coasters and coat them in chalkboard paint. Write down guests names so people don't run the risk of picking up the wrong drink, or write down drink names.

Votive Holders

  • Paint regular votive holders and then use them as place cards at a dinner table. Write people's names in chalk and then place a lit votive inside.

Napkin Rings

  • Coat napkin rings in chalkboard paint and use them as place cards at a table. It's a fun and unexpected twist on tradition.

Stay Organized with Chalkboard Paint

Calendar

  • Stay organized with a chalkboard calendar. This one can be done right on the wall in a kitchen, office, or mudroom. Start with a black basecoat and then mix in a little white paint to create alternating lighter squares.

Tabletop

  • Cover a tabletop in a child's room with chalkboard paint. They can play games like tic-tac-toe or use it to make pretty pictures.

Flower Pots

  • Can't remember the growing instructions for plants and flowers? Cover the pots in chalkboard paint and write the ideal growing conditions right on them.

Jars and Canisters

  • Have a lot of spices and baking supplies? Organize them by putting them in jars and painting the tops. Write the contents of the jar or canister in chalk.

Tags

  • Take plain wooden tags or cutouts in fun shapes and give them a coat of chalkboard paint. Write massages on the tags and hang them around the house, or stick cutouts on the wall and write little notes. Use cutouts of men and women and attach them to the bathroom door in a busy household. People can write their names on them before going in. You'll never have to pound on the door and yell, "Who's in there?" again!

There are tons of crafty things that can be done with chalkboard paint. Use your imagination and try something new.
