Keeping your memories in scrapbooks with all of the beautiful embellishments and papers doesn't have to cost a small fortune.

Scrapbooking embellishments

For those of us that love to scrapbook, you find out very quickly how many different embellishments there are out there and how expensive they can be. Scrapbooking doesn't have to break the bank.

  • Shop around. You may find a stamper at one store for $10.00 only to find it at the dollar store. Use discount and dollar stores.
  • Look beyond the craft section for paper. Wrapping paper and brown paper bags can be used for scrapbooking paper.
  • Embellishments can come from anywhere. Go through magazines before you throw them away. Cut out pictures and letters and even color patches. Make a file to keep them nice.
  • Use the actually gift tag and ribbon from a special gift. My mother-in-law is Japanese. When my grandson was born just before Christmas a few years ago, she wrote out his gift tag in Japanese. It was perfect for his scrapbook.
  • Collect brochures from vacation and cut out the pictures and titles of the places you visited.
  • Before you throw out clothes, remove the buttons, zippers and pockets. Imagine a picture of your new baby overlayed with a 12x12 piece of your maternity top unzipped to reveal the baby inside. Or a pocket with the flower that your child brought you home sticking out of it.
  • Use the internet. There are sites that are filled with beautiful motivational verses. Printed on nice paper, they will rival many of the expensive embellishments. Also look for free clip art, comics, articles, etc. (If you use clip art that is free, make sure you read the fine print to insure it is legal for personal use only.)
  • Use newspapers for paper and headlines for lettering.
  • Use greeting cards (cut the verses and pictures out to use together or separate.
  • Use junk mail (These are often made to be eye catching, take advantage of the free pictures and lettering.)
  • Use packaging (think wheaties box cover)
  • Use the labels on clothing that is being discarded. Save the labels and create a collage.
