Rug makingScrap fabric, scissors, canvas and knotsNov 6, 2006 Mary Welling-Bonney
Gather up all that left over fabric pieces. go through your old linens and the kids old clothing. We are about to give them a whole new life.
Materials needed: latch rug canvas 24"X18" scissors fabric scraps optional: rug backing Cut fabric into 1" x 8" strips. Going around the outside edge, one space at a time, fold the fabric in half the longway twice. Poke it through the hole from the top down. Pull it halfway through and poke it through the next hole. The two ends should both be on top now. Knot. Continue all the way around. *Skip the next row and go in one more. Repeat the directions from the outside row. Repeat from *. Vary the colors and textures by using different fabrics. Don't worry if some are shorter or longer you will trim them when you are done. When you are done, it is optional to finish off the back. I would recommend it simply because the rug will slide out from under you on a slick floor. At the home improvement stores they sell a rubber backing that can be painted onto the back and will give it some grip. Once the backing is completely dry, turn the rug over and trim all of the end even. Don't get carried away if they aren't exact. It is fine for some to be slightly different. It is better to have some different then to keep trimming until you have a bad haircut. Once you have tried it, vary the size. I am making a roomsize rug. It is a long and intense project when you go large but they are great for winter projects. They keep your lap toasty. As always, just have fun.
