How to Sew Quick and Easy Curtains

Make Curtains in Just One Day

Feb 15, 2008 Mary Welling-Bonney

Are you feeling like your home could use a mini face lift? New curtains can do the trick. These curtains hang from rings with clips attached.

These curtains really are quick and simply constructed.

When making curtains, measure the width of your window. The width is the same width you will use for the panels if you are making two. If you only want one panel, make it double the width of your window. For our example we are going to make a curtain for a window 30 inches wide. We want the equivalent of a standard 84-inch length to reach the floor. If you have higher ceilings, you will need to add length.

Our fabric is 65 inches wide. After creating a hem, we will be perfect for the width. The length we are going for is not 84 inches. It is the equivalent. Traditional curtains hang threaded through a rod. These curtains are going to hang from rings with clips attached. We will be gaining the extra fabric from the top of the clip to just above the rod that would have been fabric. Our length for purchased fabric is two and a half yards. This will allow for a four-inch hem on the bottom and a two-inch hem on the top.

  • With your panel cut out, we are going to press in our hems with an iron. On top, fold over one inch. Press. Then fold again two inches and press. Stitch with a machine.
  • On the bottom, fold over two inches and press. Now fold over four inches and press. Stitch with a machine.
  • On the sides of each panel, fold over a half-inch and press. Fold over a half-inch again and press. Sew on your machine.
  • On the top of the panel, attach clip rings. If you want a real drape to your curtain, make the clips about 16 inches apart. If you want the curtain to hang closer to the rod, make them about 12 inches apart. Play with them and see what works for you.

You can even go to your craft store and get a bamboo rod to replace the traditional rod. It will give your room a whole new feel. Or go out and cut a tree branch to use as a rod and bring the outside in.

Make a set for each season, holiday and family gathering. Make a set that your guests can leave messages on for a family reunion and bring them back out each year for people to add to and read what was written previously.

Make curtains in all different colors so you have curtains for your adventurous times as well as your more subdued periods.

Make an extra piece of fabric twice the length of the curtain panel plus one and a half times the width of the window. Drape it from the floor up and around to the floor on the opposite side.

These curtains are easy enough to make that you can accomodate every mood.
