Many people enjoy the nautical feel in their home. Here is a fun idea for window treatments

Materials Needed:

  • 2 yards of muslin
  • 2 wooden curtain rods with rod holders
  • 1" grommets with grommet tools (measure your window and count 2 grommets for every 3 inches across the width)
  • cotton rope
  • wood stain (optional)
  • stitch witchery
  • iron

Cut the fabric to window size adding 9 inches to the height and 2 inches to the width. Do not add the usual additional fabric for length. Fold over two inches on the top. Press down. Fold over another two inches on the top and fold down. Press. Seal using stitch witchery.

Repeat on the bottom.

Fold over 1/4 inch on the side. Press. Fold over another 1/2 inch and press down. Seal with stitch witchery and repeat on other side.

Stain the wood curtain rods if unfinished.

Grommet at the beginning of each upper corner of the fabric. Fold fabric in half and grommet at the center point. From the end grommet to the center, find the halfway point and grommet. Repeat for the other corner. Fill in grommets between the existing grommets so they are approx 3-4 inches apart.

Repeat this process for the bottom of the curtain.

Attach the curtain rod as you would normally about 4 inches above the window.

Knot the rope on one end. Lace the rope through the first upper grommet and around the rod. Leave the rope slack so there are about 3-4 inches from the top of the fabric to the rod with only lacing between. Continue through the next grommet and around the rod all the way to the end. Knot off rope.

Measure 4" below the curtain bottom. Attach the second curtain rod upside down. The hooks should face the floor so if you rested the curtain rod on the hooks it would fall to the floor. This next step is easier if you have someone to help hold the rod in place.

Knot the rope on one end. Lace the rope through the first lower grommet and around the rod. This time you are going to have the rope taut, not tight. Continue through the next grommet and around the rod all the way to the end. Knot off rope.

You have just made you first sail.

For very little effort, they look wonderful. Add signal flags for color.
