Nature's ChristmasDecorating for the Holiday with Nature's BountyNov 22, 2007 Mary Welling-Bonney
If you love the outdoors and decorating for the holidays but are not crazy about the shiny, glossy ornaments, this one is for you.
Tree TopperMaterials Needed:
Cut the twigs to about eight inches long. Bundle twigs so that the bundle is approximately two inches thick. Wire both ends to secure. Repeat so there are ten bundles. Draw out a star shape. Your star has ten sides. Wire your bundles together into a star shape. Add a wire loop to the back to hang. OrnamentsLike anything there are many ornaments we can make. Here are just a few to get you started. You can use these as is or use this as a starting off place for your own designs. Ornament 1 Materials Needed:
Trim twigs to approximately six inches. It is approximate because having some different lengths will look best. Gather up a bundle of twigs and add pip berries. Wire the center of the bundle to secure. Use raffia or twine to hide wire. Make a loop in the back with wire to attach to a branch. Ornament 2 Take an eight-inch round piece of burlap and heap the center of it with potpourri. Fold up sides to make burlap balls. Gather up all of the edges and tie off with twine. Include a loop for hanging on the tree. You can also skip the burlap and make larger balls by using 10-12 inch burlap circles and adding a three-inch Styrofoam ball in the center. Once again, gather up the sides and secure with twine. You can add a couple twigs and a sprig of berries. Make sure to include a loop to use for hanging your ornament on the tree. GarlandThere are so many ways to make garland, here are just a few. Garland 1 Bundle twigs as we did in the ornaments and attach them to a piece of six foot twine. Repeat until twine is full. You can also attach the bundles to purchased greenery. Garland 2 Use six-inch by twelve-foot strips of burlap. The edges can be hemmed for a cleaner look or frayed for a more rustic feel. Tree SkirtsTree skirt can be made by simply using natural burlap. It can be quilted, hemmed or frayed depending on the look you are hoping to achieve. Don’t be afraid to bring in pinecones and pine needles, branches and berries. Anything you feel will enhance your design is always the right way to go. Take the whole family and go for a walk at the lake or in the woods by your home. It is fun for the kids to see what they can find to turn into an ornament.
