Make your own specialty paper with a fun technique that you can share
This is a great way to customize paper gift bags, stationary, wrap, cards and give them so spice.
Materials Needed:
Acrylic paint
Paper
Water
12” x 9”x 3” cake pan
eye droppers
small bowls
Alum
sponge
paper towels
newspaper or plastic to cover work surface
optional: fork, toothpick, straw, markers, stampers, etc.
First process is treating your paper with Alum. This can be found in the spices at the grocery store. Just put 4 Tablespoons of Alum in one quart or water. Sponge the water onto the paper. Allow to dry.
Taking your first color, put approximately two tablespoons of paint into a bowl. The consistency is key here. It needs to be slightly thicker than milk. Add water if necessary and mix well. Add a little water at a time so you don’t go too thin. Repeat in separate bowls for each color.
Fill the cake pan with approx. two inches of water. Using the eye dropper, drop several drops of color onto the water. You will notice I did not say into the water. You want the paint to float. If it sinks right to the bottom, it is too thick, thin it down. When you have it the right consistency, add another color in the same manner.
Gently slide a piece of paper into the water, disturbing the paint and water as little as possible. Lay the paper flat on the bottom of the pan. If you would like, you can swirl the paint around with the fork or toothpick or blow bubble into the paint with the straw. Slowly lift the paper and lay it aside on paper towel to dry.
Add stamps and markers if you desire. Honestly the color alone doesn’t need anything if you want just the color.
As you continue, leave the residue colors until you either need a pure design color or the colors begin mudding up. Then dump the paint, clean and refill with water and begin again. You can get very sophisticated or include the kids and let them spend a rainy day being creative. As always, just have fun.
