This project will direct you through the step by step instructions for making whimsical throw pillows that are dressed to the nines.
This is another of our green projects. We will be recycling old clothing either from the closet or from your local resale store.
The directions are for one pillow. Simply double the materials for each additional pillow.
Materials Needed:
One Suit Jacket
One Dress Shirt
One Coordinating Tie
Sewing Machine
Needle and Thread
Polyfill
Scissors
Tape Measure
Scrap Paper
Pencil
Prep
Button up the shirt and stuff it with the polyfill to open it up. Slip your piece of scrap paper into the underside of the neck opening. Use your pencil to trace the opening onto the paper. Remove the paper and polyfill from the shirt.
From the tail of the shirt cut a piece the shape of the pattern you made on the scrap paper adding one half inch all the way around. Lift the collar of the shirt and turn it inside out. Sew your tail piece to cover the neck opening. Turn right side out.
Lay the shirt flat on a surface and measure fourteen inches from shoulder to shoulder with the seven inch mark being at the center. Mark the two out side edges.
Move your measure down about six inches and repeat the measure and mark. Draw a line from the upper mark to the lower mark on each side.
Now measure from the top down fourteen inches. You will only make one mark as the top of the shirt is the other mark. So this six inches off center on either side. Draw a line connecting these marks across the lower edge.
Cut on the lines drawn.
Repeat the measures for the suit jacket. Connect those lines also and cut.
Sewing
Turn the shirt inside out and stitch all but a small opening to be able to turn it inside right and stuff. Turn and stuff. Hand sew shut.
Turn the jacket piece inside out and sew the sides. You do not have to leave a space to turn as you still have the neck opening. Turn piece right side out. Put the stuffed shirt into the neck opening of the suit. Adjust so everything lays smoothly.
Put the tie around the shirt collar and tie it as you would a tie. Fold the collar over the tie. tuck the tie into the suit jacket and up under if need be.
Finishing
Tack the shoulders of the shirt and jacket together if you desire to keep them in place. If you want to be able to change the jacket or shirt for different moods or holidays, leave it untacked.
You now have a fast and easy bit of whimsy for the man who has everything.
