Making Stuff: Craft Book Review

An Alternative Book for Crafters With Something Fresh

Feb 7, 2008 Mary Welling-Bonney

Here is a great new crafter's resource book that sets itself apart from the rest.

Making Stuff: An Alternative Craft Book by Black Dog Publishing is the updated version of the ultimate resource book for all the crafts you enjoy now or have always wanted to learn.

Making Stuff gives step by step directions for knitting, felting, applique, sewing and crochet. So how is this different from the old craft resource books you already own? The difference between all of the old resource books on your shelf and Making Stuff is that Making Stuff gives you loads more, and the mediums and projects it includes are not for your grandmother. The clothing, jewelry, journals and so on are made for today's crafter.

How many of your old craft resource books include chapters on working with hemp fibers or felting? Does your old craft book show you how to make yourself a set of wings or paper maché jewelry? Also, many of the projects in Making Stuff are focused on being environmentally friendly. They show you how to make mittens from an old sweater or a bath mat from an old T-shirt. All crafters know how green thinking is becoming more and more important in our world today.

Making Stuff includes decoupage projects, origami, lanterns and soap making. The book incorporates a large section on some of the most imaginative and cutting edge puppets around. It also includes instructions for making Chai tea bags for the bath, purses from recycled men's neckties and kites. There is literally something for everyone's crafting in this book.

Making Stuff holds something to surprise and stimulate your own ideas every time you turn the page. You can make the projects they have compiled or use their ideas as a starting off place to make your own original. Either way, the book definitely has value.

Black Dog Publishing has included photos and diagrams for the projects to make them easy to recreate yourself. For all of the craft books out there on the market today, Making Stuff: An Alternative Craft Book is really different and has a lot to offer any crafter. Black Dog Publishing also has a Making Stuff for Kids, which you may want to check out too.

If you know of a craft book you think other crafters would be able to benefit from knowing about, make sure to e-mail me so it can be included in future articles.
