As our blooms disappear for another year, here is a way to keep them alive and blooming all year long.
Materials Needed:
Cut 2 three-inch circles. Cut a slit from the outer edge to the center in both of the circles. Using the scissors cut petals all the way around both of the yellow circles. Set aside.
Take 2 green pipe cleaners and twist them around each other to make one stronger pipe cleaner.
Using one of the yellow circles, hot glue the pipe cleaner twist end into the center of the circle by sliding the 1/4" tip of the pipe cleaners into the center cut of the yellow circle and add a dab of hot glue.
Now place the second yellow circle of petals behind the first. Do not line up the petals. Stagger them so that the back petals are between the front petals. This is not exacting so don't worry if it only fits partially. There is nothing exacting in nature.
Cut a brown circle about 1/2 inch and glue to the center of the flower.
Cut a two-inch by 1/2 inch piece of green felt. Along one long side cut out triangles. You do this by cutting a diagonal 1/4" deep toward the right every 1/8". Then do the same thing to the left.
Now glue and wrap this piece with the triangles pointed downward to the underside of the flower where it meets the stem.
Cut leaves and glue onto the stem (pipe cleaner). Vary the size for interest. In small daisies you can use one layer instead of two to give it the look of an immature flower. You can also use different colors to make asters.
Materials Needed:
Cut rose petals by making ovals ranging from one and a half inches to a quarter inch. Make about a dozen per flower. Cut each oval so that the bottom third is removed. If you cut away this piece with an upward curve it will make working with these much easier. They should end up looking like an oval cookie with a bite taken out of them.
Now beginning with the smallest piece, glue it to the end of the pipe cleaner making sure to curve it around. Now when you glue the next largest piece, overlap the previous piece slightly and work this piece around. Repeat for each piece. As you get to the outer edge of petals, make sure the glue is only at the bottom edge so the petals can be pulled open and down.
We have included and artificial rose because the leaves of a rose are very different, almost spiky. If you want something more realistic, use the leaves as a pattern for your felt leaves and for the piece that goes around the underside of the flower. If you want to make a rose bud, just stop prior to the last open petals. You can use different colors and sizes for variety.
