Aprons aren't for grandma anymore. Aprons are a great accessory for any crafter. Cooks use aprons to protect their clothing from spills.
Materials Needed:
- Sewing machine
- One yard of fabric
- Thread
- Scissors
- Measure
- Bias tape
- Iron
- Pencil
- Pins
You will need one yard of heavy weight fabric per apron. Cotton works best.
Instructions:
- Open the fabric up and cut out a rectangle 18" x 22". Now cut a second rectangle 10" x 12". You will also need to cut four 3" strips measuring 30" long.
- Sew two of the 3" strips end to end. Measure the center of the 18" x 22" rectangle along the 18" side. Mark the center point. This is the top. Pin the mark at the seam of the strips you just sewed together making sure they are wrong side out. Pin the remainder of the 18" side to the strips on both sides of the center. Sew the two pieces together.
- On the opposite side of the strip do the same thing with the smaller rectangle measuring the center of the 12" side. Pin the small rectangle all the way across and sew the pieces together.
- Fold the edges in on the strip and rectangles and iron.
- Sew the remaining two strips together end to end. Fold all of the edges in and iron.
- Pin this strip wrong sides together over the other strip. Sew all four sides.
- Sew down the edges of the two rectangles.
- Cut two pieces of bias tape sixteen inches long each. Stitch them both closed. Sew them on the top of the small rectangle corners making ties to go around the neck.
- To make a non-bibbed apron cut the large rectangle 36" x 22". You will not use the small rectangle or the bias tape.
- Sew two of the 3" strips end to end.
- Fold in the salvage edges all the way around the rectangle and sew.
- Measure the center of the 36" x 22" rectangle along the thirty six inch side. Mark the center point. This is the top. Pin the center of the rectangle to the center seam of the strip with right sides together. Measure out nine inches on each side of the center on the strip. Mark. Pin the outside end of the rectangle to the nine inch mark on each side. You will have a lot of excess fabric between the pins. Working on one side at a time find the center of the excess fabric and the center of the strip between the pins and pin the two marks together. Repeat until you have pinned down all of the fabric. Repeat the process on the other side of center. This apron will be gathered using your pinning.
- Sew the remaining two strips together. For both strips fold in their salvage edges and iron. Sew the two strips together wrong sides facing.
Make several for yourself, and while you're add it make a few more to give as gifts. Decorate them to suit your style or craft.
