You don't need to be a master baker or chocolatier to make a sensational cake for your child's birthday.

You will need the ability to bake a two layer cake and be able to print off of the internet. It really is that simple.

Materials Needed:

  • Computer
  • Printer
  • Skewers
  • Glue
  • Cake
  • Small poster board
  • Scissors

Preparation

  1. Prepare the cake as directed.
  2. Allow cake to cool and then frost as desired.
  3. Now comes the fun part. On your computer, look up whatever characters your child is crazy about. It can be Dora the Explorer, Batman, Backyardigans, Little Einsteins, or any others that you can think of.
  4. Open a blank Word document and copy each picture you like onto the Word document. You can always delete ones later you aren't crazy about. You will want four to six pictures. Use the Word document to shrink or enlarge the characters so that they are all about 8" to 10" high.
  5. Print your Word document
  6. Cut out each of the characters making sure to include all of the detail.
  7. Cut a 1" x 6" rectangle from the poster board for each character you print.

Assembly

  1. Lay one character face down.
  2. On the back of the character lay a skewer so that it runs the length of the character with the point and excess length sticking out the bottom.
  3. Crease one of the one by six rectangles in half the long way. You don't want it folded in half just a slight crease running the length in the center.
  4. Heavily glue the skewer to the back of the character.
  5. Glue the inside of the one by six rectangle and lay over top of the skewer from the bottom of the character running upwards.
  6. Repeat for each character.
  7. Position the characters on top of the cake by piercing the skewers into the cake so the characters are standing on the cake top.

You can alter the idea for adults too or for special events.

Ideas for more cakes

  • Make a cake with all of the football players from your husband's favorite team.
  • Make all of the child's favorite characters and add underwear to each character for a potty training celebration.
  • Make a fiftieth birthday cake by having a stand up photo of the birthday girl or boy at each decade through the last fifty years.
  • Make an anniversary cake by having a stand up of the initial wedding photo in the center of the cake.
  • Make a teens cake by using their favorite musicians.
  • Make a Christmas cake by having stand ups of Santa and all of his reindeer.
  • For Thanksgiving you can have turkeys running around the top of your cake.

Have fun with it and come up with your own ideas.
