Make Your Own Wedding Cake

A Simple and Elegant Wedding Cake Design You Can Create Yourself

© Mary Welling-Bonney

Wedding cakes come in all different shapes and sizes. The one thing they share is that fact that they cost dearly.

For those of you who want something a little different but are on a budget and prefer to do it yourself, here is a cake you can make yourself and no one will be the wiser.

Materials Needed:

Instructions:

  1. Bake the cakes for all four cake pans. Make sure to grease and flour the pans well. When cakes are done, put them on cooling racks so they stop baking.
  2. When cake are completely cool to the touch, transfer them to the platform they will travel on. If you are using cardboard, triple the corragated cardboard and cover with contact paper. Make sure the platform is only slightly larger than the cake so it doesn't bow when you lift it. It will help to have a second person on hand when you are moving it.
  3. Now you can begin decorating. Stack the cakes so they are centered. Cut away the corners of all of the layers. Do this by cutting a three-inch square out of cardboard. Mark the corners A, B, C and D. Now draw an outward arc from corner A to corner C. Cut out this shape. This should look like a chubby ice cream cone. Lay the cardboard template on the cake so the right-angle corner matches up with the corner of the cake. The curved arc should be inward. Use your knife to cut this shape out of the cake at each corner.
  4. Frost or Fondant the cake. It will be harder to keep the fondant smooth with these cutouts, so you will want to apply a "crumb-coat" first, then the main coating. You will be able to cover up any goofs with flowers later, so don't worry.
  5. After frosting or fondant hardens, place a votive in each cut-out corner. Insert a candle in each one. Place the cake topper on the top tier. Now decorate, using the flowers. Make sure to use them evenly all the way around the cake. Don't forget to use the greenery of the flowers also. It can make all the difference. Just make sure none of the flowers are too close to the candles; otherwise, they will be a hazard when the candles are lit.
  6. You can call it done at this point or you can add rows of pearl beads draped on each tier or any other embellishment that works with the theme and colors of your wedding.

At the reception, you can have extra votives on hand to replace the original ones if they burn all down. Light all 16 candles at the start of your reception.

You can alter the design by putting the candles on only one side or on every other layer or even just one corner all the way up. You choose and make it your own.
