This charming Easter egg wreath is the perfect decoration for your Easter festivities. Best of all, it takes less than one hour to make.

Materials and tools

  • 12- or 14-inch Styrofoam, straw, or twig wreath form
  • 25 large hollow eggs (hand blown*, papier maché, Styrofoam, or plastic)
  • 15 small hollow eggs (same as above)
  • Low temperature glue gun and glue sticks
  • Dried moss (optional)
  • *1 food or egg coloring kit
  • *1 small pin (for piercing egg)
  • *1 drinking straw

There are two ways to make this Easter egg wreath. If you’re pressed for time, the easiest way is to purchase faux eggs at the dollar store or a craft shop. Faux eggs can be made of papier maché, Styrofoam, or plastic and come in a variety of colors and sizes.

With these purchased eggs, you won’t have any breakage and the wreath is easy enough for your kids to make with a little help from you or an older sibling.

If you have the time and/or want to save some money, you can use your own blown eggs. Use small and large white eggs as these are easier to dye. Make extra in case of breakage. Note that you can freeze raw eggs to use later.

*Preparing Your Own Blown Eggs

  1. To hollow out the eggs, working over a bowl, pierce one end of a raw egg with a pin. Use the pin to enlarge the hole slightly and to break up the yolk.
  2. Pierce the other end. Cut a short piece of the drinking straw and use this over the hole to blow out the insides, forcing the contents of the egg out through the larger hole into a bowl.

To Color Blown Eggs

Make up solutions of food coloring following the directions on the food coloring packet. Note that the colors will be paler once the eggs are dried. Experiment with a few before continuing.

Making the Wreath

Tip: You only have to cover the top and sides of the wreath. Keep the back flat for easier hanging on a wall or door, or to use the completed wreath on the table as a centerpiece.

  1. For easier selection while gluing, place the large eggs and smaller ones in separate bowls.
  2. Using your glue gun, start by gluing on the large eggs around the top and sides of the wreath.
  3. Pack in as closely together as possible without breaking the eggs.
  4. Fill in any gaps with the smaller ones.
  5. Optional: If there are any further gaps left between the eggs, stuff bits of dried moss in these gaps.
  6. Hang the completed wreath where it can be admired by everyone. Or you can use it as a pretty table centerpiece by placing a candle in the center and adding small vases of flowers around the candle.
