You see extreme cakes on television all the time on competitions and regular baking shows. You don't have to be an expert to make an extreme cake.

This zoo themed cake was a huge hit with the birthday boy. It can be made it one evening if you have all of the materials gathered. It doesn't have a lot of steps but will make a huge impact on your guests. The cake ends up the gift also. After the cake is eaten the animals and characters get washed up and the child has them to play with them and remember their wonderful birthday.

Materials Needed:

  • Two cake mixes – the birthday person's favorite
  • Four cans of frosting – also the birthday person's favorite. You can use two different colors. (The example has chocolate and German chocolate.)
  • Two 12" or 14" round cake boards
  • One tube lime green icing
  • One zoo play set
  • One train / animal play set
  • One package of Wilton 6" sticks
  • Two packages of Wilton balloon clusters
  • One can 6" high by approx. 4" wide ( example uses a 40oz stew can)
  • Decorator tips
  • Frosting knife
  • 12" or 14" round cake pan
  • Permanent marker (red)

Preparing the Materials

  1. Using the permanent marker, color 20 of the 6" sticks completely.
  2. Cut three of the balloon clusters apart so you have individual balloons with approx. a 1/2" stem on each.
  3. Bake the cake as one 12" or 14" round cake.
  4. Using one can of frosting, frost the stew can all the way around.
  5. Frost one of the 14" circular boards.

Assembling the First Layer of Your Cake

  1. Place the frosted stew can in the center of the frosted 14" board.
  2. Place the animal train set around the can on the board, making sure to leave room on the outside edge of the board.

Assembling the Second Layer of Your Cake

  1. Center the cake on your unfrosted 14" cake board.
  2. Frost the cake and any edge of the cake board that is visible.
  3. Arrange your zoo animals on the cake. Use frosting to hold them in place.

Putting it all Together

  1. Place a glob of frosting on top of the frosted stew can.
  2. Center the cake on the stew can.
  3. Using a dab of frosting on each end of the 6" sticks, place them between the 14" boards about every 2"-3" around the bottom edge of the frosted board and the underside of the upper board. They will look as if they are holding up the cake and create a cage look.
  4. Between the sticks on the bottom board place a small glob of frosting and line the edge with the balloons you cut apart, making sure to alternate colors.
  5. On the edge of the top board, choose a decorator tip and run a line of lime green icing around the edge.
  6. Use a small circular tip to write "Happy Birthday" around the side of the cake.
