These bowls make wonderful Christmas gifts. You can make one for each member of the family and fill them with sweets, potpourri, or make some bowl fillers.

The technique is the same for a large bowl as it is for a small one. Whether you choose the use wide or narrow cording doesn't change the instructions. The chunkier the cording, the chunkier the look of the finished product. On the other hand the smaller the cording, the daintier the bowl will appear.

Materials Needed:

  • Ribbon-(The amount needed will depend on the width of your ribbon and the size of the bowl you want.)
  • Cording-(The amount of cording will also depend of the size of the bowl you want to create.)
  • Large plastic needle
  • Needle and thread
  • Scissors

Round One

  1. To start your bowl you will take one end of the cording and place the end of the ribbon on the end of the cording so they are perpendicular.
  2. Wrap the ribbon around the cord end so that it overlaps the start of the ribbon and holds itself in place. (You can tack it to the cording with needle and thread if it slides around.)
  3. Making sure your ribbon is laying flat, wrap about three to four inches of cording.
  4. Fold the wrapped cording in half. Wrap the ribbon around both cords so the the beginning end of the cording is hidden. (See picture 1)

Round Two

  1. Begin wrapping the unwrapped cording. Make sure the ribbon lays flat at each pass.
  2. When you lay the newly wrapped cording side by side with the center you folded you will continue wrapping until you reach the area of the center that has a hole through it. (See picture one)
  3. Thread your ribbon through the plastic needle. Using the needle, puch your ribbon through the center hole joining the first and second round.
  4. Continue wrapping about 2 more inches and repeat step three through the same hole on the opposite side of the center.

Remaining Rounds

  1. Continue wrapping the cording. About ever two to three inches use your needle to push the ribbon through the previous round. (See picture two)
  2. When your base is about 6 inches, begin tapering the cording in slightly as you wrap. You do this by laying the cording up slightly as opposed to side by side. With each pass it will create a bowl shape.
  3. Continue making rounds until you reach the size bowl you desire.

Finishing Off

  1. When you are ready to end your bowl, cut the cording so that it tapers to a gradual point.
  2. Continue wrappping and joining with the previous round right up the the end.
  3. Wrap the end so that it is completely covered and join in previous round.
  4. Tack with needle and thread.

OptionsYou can add an additional base to your bowl by making a ring of cording wrapped to match the bowl. This can be sewn or hot glued into place on the center underside. Another alternative is to use a five inch brass ring and attach it to the center underside for the bowl to rest on.

You can also change out the materials used. For a natural look you can use jute instead of ribbon or even try using tea dyed gauze bandages.
