Create refrigerator magnet puzzles with your favorite pictures

The front of the household refrigerator is often used as a collage of photographs, children's artwork and reminder notes. Why not add a little fun to the mix?

This project creates a playful way to display favorite photographs and artwork on the refrigerator. Magnetic Puzzles are easy to make and doesn’t take much time to complete. It is also a great way to display family photos at the office as well. Simply place the puzzle on a filing cabinet or any metal surface.

Items you’ll need:

  • 1-5x8 photograph (duplicate, not original)
  • 1-5x8 magnet sheet with adhesive side (available at craft stores in various sizes)
  • 1-6x9 Laminating sheet (or clear contact paper)
  • Ruler
  • Craft knife (or paper cutter)
  • Silver colored (or other metallic ink) permanent marker
  • Cardboard

Instructions:

  1. Carefully place laminating sheet on photo. It works best to start from one side and slowly adhere to the opposite side. Starting from the center, rub out any bubbles. Trim off access from edges of laminating sheet with craft knife. The purpose of laminating sheet is to protect the top of the photo from smudging and becoming damaged.
  2. Remove backing from magnetic sheet. Set it, with adhesive side up, on work area. Line up the photo and magnetic sheet. Carefully put the two together. If necessary, trim edges.
  3. Turn the photograph side face down on the work area, exposing the back of the magnetic sheet. Using the ruler, measure and draw a line with the permanent marker every inch going across and evert two inches going down the sheet. Do not write on picture.
  4. Set project on cardboard with grid lines face up. The cardboard will assist to keep work area from getting damaged while cutting. Carefully and slowly use craft knife to cut on the lines to create puzzle pieces.

Congratulations, you finished making a Magnetic Photograph Puzzle.

Additional ideas for using this creative project:

  • Create a Magnetic Puzzle using a child’s drawing and painting. Scan and print a copy of the original (or take to a copy shop and make a copy). It is not advised to use the original.
  • Use the cover page of greeting cards to decorating metal surfaces for the holidays.
  • Pictures from calendars and magazines work as well for personal enjoyment.
  • Gift giving. These make wonderful and thoughtful presents. Create and send to family members and friends for birthdays and holidays.
  • For an extra special anniversary present, copy a wedding photo or invitation and use to create the Magnetic Puzzle.

The only limitation is the imagination. Enjoy the creative process.
