We have all seen the magnetic poetry for sale. It is a fun idea but crafters don't buy what they can make and make better.

Magnetic poetry is a great idea for leaving a message for your loved one, expressing your feelings and making people smile. When you make your own not only can you decide on the size and type of font, you can make the words relevant to your world. You are limited to a specified number of words per container with a purchase but make them yourself and the only limit is your supplies, time and imagination.

Materials needed:

  • Half inch Magnetic strip (these come about 2’ long)
  • Computer
  • Printer
  • Paper
  • Scissors
  • Old magazine or cardboard
  • Exacto blade

On your computer type all of the words you would like to have. Make sure to include cute names, places you enjoy, funny sayings you and your significant other use, family members names, sentiments, etc. We are using ½ inch magnetic strips but you can go larger by purchasing larger magnetic backing.

Set your font for just under ½ inch so you have a slight margin on all four sides. Do not precut magnetic stripping. You will want them to match up to the words perfectly and they are done better after the fact.

Before printing you may want to consider adding color. If you have WordArt you can even add a rainbow effect. If you are going to make a lot of words you might want to consider making all of the names in one color, places in another, emotions in another, etc. This is so that after the face when you have a sea of words you will be able to find the word you want quicker by only needing to look through the ones in the appropriate color.

You also have another option prior to printing. Consider using colored papers that will coordinate with the décor of the room. If you are putting them on your refrigerator and your kitchen is blue and cream, you may not want strips of purple across your refrigerator. On the other hand using blue or cream card stock would make them less invasive to the design of the room.

Now it is finally time to print the words. Roughly cut them out leaving a margin. They can be trimmed later. Peel the backing off just enough of the magnet. Lay the word on the magnetic strip centering the word top to bottom.

Using the scissors cut the word off of the roll. Lay it word down on the magazine or cardboard and using the exacto knife, trim away the excess. You have now made your first word. They are quick and easy and loads of fun to use.

Add the large magnetic sheets with photos and you can put messages on the picture of the person the message is for.

Purchase a metal tin and fill it with words and you have a gift for any age.

Barbara Bell :
I made magnets just like these as wedding favors - with mine and my husbands' names and the wedding date. The table centerpieces were galvanized French flower pails filled with flowers, and the magnets decorated the buckets. :)

Hey...I love this idea. I found a bit of an alternative to it! Avery makes a printable magnetic sheet that you can print the words onto, they work with inkjet home printers and are so easy! You just type in words, cut them apart and you're done! Thanks for posting this...oh and you can find the avery sheets on the Staples website. You can't get them in the store, they are only available on line! Marty
