Leather Cell Phone Case

On a Shoestring

Well not really on a shoesstring, but with a shoestring.

Are you confused yet? This cell phone case is actually made using leather shoe laces and plastic canvas.

Materials Needed:

Since cell phones come in different sizes there is not one measurement for all phones. Plastic canvas is made as a grid. Measure the width, height and depth of your cell phone. Add two more grid lines to the width and depth on each side. For example, your cell phone measures three inches across. Measure three inches across on the plastic canvas and mark. Measure the same piece by the height measurement of the cell phone. Before cutting this piece out add two grid columns on each side of the width. Cut this piece out and cut a second piece the same dimensions. These are you front and back pieces.

The side piece will be made as one long piece by measuring the length and width of the piece you just cut. Now add the numbers for the length plus the number for width plus the number for length. The sum of these numbers is the total length of your side piece. The width of this piece is the width of the cell phone plus two more grid columns added to each side. Cut out one of this piece.

Using the shoe laces lace the grid on each of the pieces row by row avoiding the exterior grid on all of the three pieces.

Once done you will begin assembly. Line the tall thin piece up next to the shorter, wider piece. Begin at the top lacing the edges. Go down the side, across the bottom and up the other side. When you get to the end leave about ten extra inches of lace hanging for now.

Go back and lace the tall thin piece to the back shorter piece and repeat the process.

For the top rim of your case, begin lacing on the side where the excess shoe laces strings are hanging. This way you will lace your way around and end in the same spot. Leave about ten extra inches of leather lacing again. This should give you three laces on one side left over.

Braid the three pieces together. You can loop this back to the top of the other side and tie to make a handle or use it to tie the cell phone case to the handle of your purse.

Try adding different shades of leather here and there to make a pattern.
