Making Christmas and holiday crafts that use recycled materials go easy on the Earth and easy on the budget.
This is a simple, quick, and inexpensive craft that will add holiday charm to your home. It is a perfect craft for younger children at home, or in a classroom full of students. The ornaments can be hung on a tree, used as a door hanger, or strung together for a wall hanging.
It’s fun to make crafts with kids that are easy and inexpensive. This craft is also a way to go green. Recycling egg cartons that might otherwise be thrown away turns this into an earth-friendly activity.
Supplies Needed for Egg Carton Jingle Bell Ornaments:
A paperboard egg carton (The Styrofoam type doesn’t hold the paint and glitter well.)
One jingle bell per ornament (Buy these in the craft department.)
One length of ribbon per ornament, about 30 cm or 16-18 inches long
Tempera paint
Glitter
Newspaper or craft paper to protect the work area
Instructions:
First, cut the lid off the egg carton. Save the lid to use in another eco-friendly craft project.
Next, cut the carton into individual egg cups. Trim the edges to make them smooth.
Third, using the tip of the scissors poke a small hole in the bottom of the egg cup.
Fourth, paint the cup with tempra paint.
Fifth, sprinkle glitter on the outside of the cup while the paint is still wet.
While the paint and glitter dry, thread a ribbon through the jingle bell.
When the egg cup is dry, thread the ribbon through the hole in the egg cup, keeping the jingle bell on the inside of the cup. Tie a pretty bow or knot at the top, and hang the ornament as a holiday decoration.
Other ideas:
Paint a design on the egg cup, instead of a solid color.
Paste small pieces of wrapping paper on the egg cup, then decoupage over it.
Use yarn, wrapping paper ribbon, or any other ribbons available.
Use a holiday colored chenille stick instead of ribbon. Wrap the chenille stick through the jingle bell, then make a hanging hook with the other end.
For a glittered edge, paint the ornament a solid color. Dip the edges in glue. Dip the glued edges in glitter.
Instead of jingle bells, put package ornaments inside the bells.
Use the jingle bells as decorations on gift packages.
This ornament is easy, and it looks pretty. It makes an excellent classroom holiday craft because it costs very little to make and most students can complete it independently. Children are proud of how nice these decorative ornaments look.
