How to Use Pumpkin Stencils for Pumpkin Carving
Here are the general steps to follow when using a pumpkin stencil, regardless of the specific tools on hand. Note that more sophisticated carvings require more steps. Perfect application of the steps below may take practice; consider testing out carving techniques on a practice pumpkin first.
- Tape the stencil to the pumpkin as flush with the skin as possible. Make sure the stencil is firmly attached so as not to move during transfer. Firmly tape down any folds that result from making the stencil lie flat.
- Use a nail or other pointed tool to poke holes along the outline of the Halloween template. The Pumpkin Lady website recommends that these holes be about ¼ inch apart and only deep enough to pierce the skin.
- Remove the pumpkin stencil, but keep it nearby as a reference.
- Use a sawing tool to saw along the dotted lines.
- Push out any completely separated pieces as you move along.
- When the stencil pattern has been completely cut, smooth out any rough edges with a knife or sawing tool.
