For many, pumpkin carving is an art. Some Halloween enthusiasts spend lots of money on the perfect pumpkin carving kit and hours creating or finding the perfect pumpkin carving pattern. For some complex and detailed Jack-o-lantern patterns, carving can take several hours! With all the effort that goes in to carving a pumpkin for Halloween, many are left looking for ways to preserve the pumpkin so the Jack-o-lantern lasts longer. Carved pumpkins are prone to two major problems: mold and drying/shriveling. So in order to preserve a pumpkin, it's essential to keep carved edges moist and one must take measures to prevent mold and bacteria in the Jack-o-lantern to stave off rotting. How to Preserve a Jack-o-Lantern and Prevent Mold, RottingWhen pumpkin carving is complete, the fresh Jack-o-lantern must be placed inside a preservation bath to kill bacteria, mold spores and to infuse the pumpkin with moisture. Use the following steps to delay rotting and prevent mold in a carved pumpkin:
Once the Jack-o-lantern is dry, spray the interior and exterior of the pumpkin using a preservation product like Pumpkin Fresh®. Pumpkin Fresh® spray and other similar products are available at party stores or in the Halloween section of craft stores and department stores like Target. When handling the carved pumpkin, it's important to wear rubber gloves to prevent contamination from bacteria. This is particularly important for the next step required for the more intricate pumpkin carvings that are created by carving in layers to create "shading" (see accompanying photo for an example of "shading.") These pumpkins will be more dramatically affected by drying and shriveling, so to preserve these pumpkins, apply a very thin coat of petroleum jelly to the pumpkin carving. Other Ways to Make a Jack-o-Lantern Last LongerThere are a few additional methods that Halloween pumpkin carving enthusiasts can use to keep the Jack-o-lantern fresh and free of mold. Spraying the carved pumpkin daily with Pumpkin Fresh® or a homemade preserving solution of bleach and water (one teaspoon per gallon), will inhibit the growth of mold and bacteria. In addition, try the following tips to help a carved pumpkin last longer and prevent rotting:
These measures can help extend the life of a carved pumpkin by several days. These tips will keep the pumpkin free of mold, bacteria and odor, thereby preserving the Jack-o-lantern for well over a week in ideal circumstances – more than enough time to get a great photo of the carved pumpkin for the scrapbook.
