How to Make Handkerchief Bunnies

Use Old Hankies to Craft these Rabbits for Easter or Any Season

Feb 21, 2008 Melissa Howard

This is a simple no-cutting, no-sewing method for making a bunny from a hanky.

Handkerchiefs are popular today. However, people most people do not use them for their intended purpose. Why not pull those pretty hankies out of storage and make a sweet little bunny to show them off. This project requires no cutting or sewing of the handkerchief.

Supplies

  • clean handkerchief
  • polyester stuffing
  • ribbon
  • scissors
  • washable adhesive
  • cotton ball
  • google eyes

Instructions

  1. Iron the hanky smooth on the ironing board.
  2. Lay the handkerchief point down (so that it looks like a diamond).
  3. Fold it in half, bringing the top point down to the bottom point (You should have a right angle triangle with the right angle as the bottom point).
  4. Cut an eight- to ten-inch length of ribbon.
  5. Open up the handkerchief and lay some polyester stuffing along the crease.
  6. Fold the handkerchief in half again.
  7. Starting at the point, roll the hanky up. Make sure to keep the roll tight when you get to the polyester stuffing and are rolling it into the body of the bunny.
  8. Fold the roll in half.
  9. Tie the folded roll snugly with the ribbon at about the half way point.
  10. Fold back the open end of the roll to make the head; leave some poking out for ears.
  11. Tie the ribbon in a bow behind the head.
  12. Use washable adhesive to glue a cotton ball on for a tail.
  13. If you want your bunny to have eyes, glue them on with washable adhesive.

Ideas and Suggestions

  • Washable adhesive is used so that the handkerchiefs will not be ruined and can be returned to their original state.
  • It is not necessary to give the bunny eyes or a tail; these bunnies are absolutely adorable without eyes or tail.
  • Try to use handkerchiefs that have a pattern in all corners or in the opposite corners so that the bunny’s ears match.
  • Make a collection of hanky bunnies and include them in Easter baskets.
  • Use a few hanky bunnies as egg warmers or as holders to display pretty Easter eggs.
  • Use a bunny as a tie-on for gifts.
  • Use washcloths to make bunnies. It is not necessary to use polyester stuffing when using washcloths. Put a pretty hand soap in the bunny’s belly and give it as a gift by itself.
  • Make bunnies out of baby washcloths and give a whole family of bunnies to a new Mom. Stick small bottles of baby toiletries in each bunny.
