Personalized Christmas Cards Using Family Pictures

Tips and tricks for creating personalized photo christmas cards featuring a family picture using online services or at home.

A personalized Christmas card featuring a family photo is a nice way of connecting with friends and family during the festive season. Bespoke photo cards are easy to make or order following a few simple steps.

Using Photos on Christmas Cards

Families who wish to customise Christmas cards with photographs have two choices:

  1. Use an existing favourite photograph. If parents have taken a favourite picture of their child they may wish to use this on their card. As existing photos are unlikely to feature any seasonal elements parents should consider embellishing the existing picture. If creating a card using a computer programme adding a festive border is an option – online sites will have some great templates available. If making cards by hand, families can add festive hats in felt, or glittery snowflakes to the picture.
  2. Take a picture especially for the Christmas card. If children have special Christmas fancy dress outfits, parents can dress them up a little early and take a fun festive picture. For a small infant a picture surrounded by sparkling Christmas decorations can make a great holiday themed shot for use on a greetings card.

Creating Customised Christmas Cards Online

Using online services is an easy way of creating a customised card. Sites like Snapfish, Photobox, Zazzle and many more offer great festive templates. Users simply upload their chosen picture and slot it into a holiday themed design. Users can also choose the wording of their cards, cutting down on writing time when their order arrives! Cards typically cost around $3 -$5 (£2-£4) to buy individually with large discounts available for bulk orders.

Using Photos for Homemade Christmas Cards

There are two ways to make photo theme cards at home. While computer buffs may wish to use a design or photo-manipulation programme to design their own professional looking cards, which can then be printed and sent, families may find it fun to hand-make their own festive photocards.

Printing photos on normal paper for use on cards allows for easy embellishment by all the family. Some ideas include:

  • Glitter pens can be used to add seasonal touches or messages to the pictures.
  • Cotton wool can be used for a great snow effect
  • Felt shapes can be glued over part of the picture creating festive motifs such as elves hats and Christmas trees.

Using Recycled Materials to Create Photo Christmas Cards

Familes who enjoy creating their own greeting cards may wish to consider saving the cards they received from friends and family to use the following year – pictures and messages can be cut out and pasted around personal photos for a decoupage effect with that personal touch.
