This fall craft makes candy corn terra cotta pots that can be used as candy dishes, place-card holders, Halloween decorations, candle holders or outdoor flower planters.

Adding autumn color to the home or table is easy with candy-corn inspired fall crafts. Terra cotta pots are the perfect medium for an autumn craft that is as simple as it is versatile. Use different size pots to make matching and homemade Halloween decorations to set an autumn table.

Fall Craft Paints Terra Cotta Pots

Making candy corn terra cotta pots takes only a few different craft supplies. The size of the pot depends on which craft is being made. For example, 2 ½-inch tall terra cotta pots can be used for place-card holders but 12-inch pots are used for outdoor flower planters. When making a candle holder craft, bring the pillar candle or votive candle that will be used to the store to see which terra cotta pot is the best fit for the candle. Candy dishes work with pots that are a medium size.

Craft supplies include sponge brushes and acrylic paint in white, yellow and orange. Painters tape is optional for the larger crafts and spray-on exterior polyurethane is needed for garden pots. Cellophane wrap, colored ribbon, tissue paper and construction paper are used for wrapping and personalizing the place-cards and Halloween gifts.

Set an Autumn Table with Halloween Decorations

Candy corn terra cotta pots can add a bright note to an autumn table. To make Halloween decorations or place-card holders, begin by painting the inside and outside of the pot with a white coat of acrylic paint. When the first coat is dry, paint a second coat of white paint around the top rim of the pot.

Using the straight edge of the sponge brush dipped in yellow paint, mark a line that circles the pot about one third of the way from the bottom of the pot. Paint from that line to the bottom of the pot with yellow paint. Paint a second coat after the first coat is dry. Fill in the middle part of the pot with two coats of orange paint.

To turn the candy corn terra cotta pots into place-card holders, wrap a small handful of candy corn in cellophane wrap. Tie with yellow and orange ribbon and cut a name tag out of yellow or orange construction paper. Place the wrapped candy and name tag into each terra cotta part and send them home with party guests.

Candy corn terra cotta pots also make great Halloween gifts for friends. To make candy dishes or candle holders, follow the same instructions except do not paint the interior of the pot. To give empty candy dishes as a Halloween gift, stack three pots lined with coffee filters or tissue paper (to protect the paint) inside each other. Wrap in tissue paper and secure with white, yellow and orange ribbon.

Fill a pot with tissue paper and candy, wrap the pot in cellophane wrap and secure with ribbon and a name tag. A set of candy dishes can be a nice gift when placed on a decorative tray or held in a decorative tin.

A candy corn-inspired candle holder is another Halloween gift option. Follow the same directions for painting the candy dishes and place a votive candle or pillar candle inside. Give one candle holder or a set as a Halloween gift to friends or teachers.

Autumn Craft for Garden Pots

Bring the autumn craft and candy corn theme outside with painted outdoor flower planters. To make a terra cotta planter, begin by using painter’s tape to mark off the white, orange and yellow sections. In the Lowe’s Creative Ideas September/October 2009 magazine, Valspar Ultra Premium in Bistro White, Fresh Persimmons and Gold Abundance satin paints are recommended. Use two coats of each color and make sure each section is dry before removing the tape. Spray the finished product with exterior polyurethane.
