In making large (pom pom style) bows we will be using 2"-3" ribbon. The more you use, the fuller the bow. Make sure not to skimp on the ribbon.
Materials Needed
A one to two foot piece of lumber
Four extra large nails (3" or more)
hammer
ribbon (at least 6 yards)
wire
In a pinch, use a friend instead of the wood and nails. The problem is getting them to sit still with their fingers the same distance apart throughout.
Decide on the size of the bow. If you want it to be 8 " across, hammer a nail at one end of the board. Measure 10" from the nail ( the dimension of the bow plus 2") and hammer another nail. Find dead center. Assuming the two nails you have already hammered in are north and south, from dead center, go east about 1/8th of an inch and hammer a nail. Now going back to dead center, go west about 1/8th of an inch and hammer the fourth nail.
You should now have a nail on each end and two nails in the middle with approx. a quarter inch between them. Lay a piece of wire about ten inches long across the middle of the board. Beginning about two inches south of center, wrap the ribbon through the center nails twisting it at dead center. Wrap the ribbon up and around the north point and bring it back through twisting it at dead center. Continue to the south nail wrapping around and twisting at dead center. Repeat approx. 12 times. When you are done, pull up the wire you layed across the center prior to starting the ribbon. Twist it around all of the ribbon at the center. Wrap and twist it secure.
Remove the two outer nails. Fluff bow.
Using the remains of the wire in the back you can add streamers the appropriate length for your location. Make a twelve inch bow for the top of your christmas tree and add eight 6 foot streamers. Use them for your front door or for a very special gift.
Thanks to Pam in Battle Creek. I always appreciate knowing what you want.
As always, just have fun.
Have a safe and Joyful Holiday
