This craft project using a compact disc, beads, and a votive candle holder makes a stunning gift using eco-friendly recycled objects.

This unique mirrored candle holder is an inexpensive gift or craft to make in four simple simple steps. It can be made using supplies on hand at home or with specially purchased supplies. Children enjoy this craft, and it can be done in the classroom with very little fuss.

Making it completely from items found around the house, turns it into an eco-friendly way to create something new out of something old. It makes a creative Christmas craft, Mother's Day craft, or other holiday craft.

Compact discs that come in the mail or that are no longer used can be recycled. Old candle holders, vases, or pretty jars can be cleaned and used for the center. Scraps of felt or other soft material can be used for the lining on the bottom of the CD. Leftover beads, pretty stones, or natural items found in the yard can become the border around the edge.

It’s simple to create a stunning gift out of things that might otherwise be thrown away. Even if items are purchased new, this candle holder can be created for about $1.00, making it a thrifty gift.

Supply List

  1. A compact disc. A free one or a used one is fine, or a new CD can be purchased.
  2. A glass votive candle holder.
  3. A small piece of felt.
  4. Small beads.
  5. Tacky glue.
  6. Hot glue and a hot glue gun.
  7. A votive candle.

Assembly

  1. Trace around the compact disc onto a piece of felt. Cut out the felt circle, and glue it to the CD, covering the advertising side and keeping the mirrored side showing.
  2. Using tacky glue, attach the beads around the outside edge of the compact disc. Gluing them on in a color or shape pattern is more aesthetically pleasing
  3. While the glue is drying, hot glue the glass votive candle holder to the center of the CD.
  4. Once all the glue is completely dry, place a scented candle in the glass votive holder.

Wrapped in pretty paper, this makes a nice surprise gift or a holiday gift.

Other Ideas

  1. Use seashells or other natural items around the edge of the CD.
  2. Create a centerpiece by using a taller glass candle holder and placing flowers or pine cones around the CD.
  3. Create a reflective vase by hot gluing a vase to the center and adding fresh flowers.
  4. Make one taller holder and a few smaller ones in the same color theme. Arrange them on a table or mantle for a stunning effect.
  5. In the classroom this gift may be made quickly, then wrapped in tissue paper for a child to take home as a present for someone special.
  6. Make several of these candle holders or vases and keep them on hand to give as hostess gifts.

Using a little imagination can go a long way with this craft. There’s no end to the variations that can be applied, making each one a unique gift. They look adorable on the table as a centerpiece with Thanksgiving Turkey Gobbler Treats around them.
