How to Make a King or Queen Crown

Make an Indestructible Dress-up Crown from Fabric

Sep 28, 2007 Melissa Howard

Tired of paper crowns that tear or plastic crowns that shatter? Make your child an indestructible fabric dress-up crown so that they can be the king or queen of your cast

Supplies

  • paper play crown from restaurant or pattern of your own design
  • fabric for the exterior of the crown
  • fleece or felt for the interior of the crown (referred to as felt in the instructions)
  • heavy weight interfacing
  • lace
  • hook and loop closure
  • jewels or buttons
  • coordinating thread
  • sewing machine
  • scissors

Instructions

  1. Measure the child’s head to determine length of crown.
  2. Cut pattern to correct size.
  3. Use pattern to cut the crown from the fabric, felt, and interfacing (one copy of the crown per material).
  4. Sandwich the felt between interfacing and the fabric with the right side of the fabric against the interfacing.
  5. Start along the bottom of the crown three or four inches from one side. Sew an eighth of an inch seam along the edge, up the side, along the top, down the next side and about four inches in along the bottom. Leave most of the bottom open.
  6. Reverse the crown through the bottom opening.
  7. Be sure to pull the seams out cleanly for a crisp edge.
  8. Turn under the raw edges of the bottom seam and pin.
  9. Top stitch around the entire crown, making sure to catch the raw edges inside the crown.
  10. Cut a piece of hook and loop about three inches long by half an inch to an inch wide.
  11. Sew the loop closure on the inside of one end of the crown. Sew it close to the bottom edge and tightly against the end.
  12. Sew the lace along the entire length of the bottom edge of the crown so that it covers the stitching for the loop closure and so that it hangs down from the edge of the crown.
  13. Sew the hook closure on the opposite end of the crown on top of the lace facing the outside of the crown.
  14. Finish by sewing or gluing on the jewels or other decorations for the crown.

Suggestions and Ideas

  • Make sure you measure the head before making the crown. It is frustrating to make a crown just a little too small or way too big.
  • Recycle: Use old fabric from favorite party dresses. Why buy new when you have nice fabric in a skirt that will never be worn again? The crown in the example is made from fine silk fabric from a beautiful dress that the owner knew she would never wear again.
  • Try to use a solid for the lining of the crown. A solid fabric will look nicer and is easier to sew on straight.
  • Keep the pattern simple. Unless you are an expert tailor and have the patience of the saint (when it comes to turning fabric), a fancy pattern will only irritate and frustrate you.
