When it comes to holidays, occasions, and gift giving, homemade craft projects like a no-sew fleece blankets can actually become one-of-a-kind gifts from the heart.

With the economy in recession, Americans are now constantly looking for different ways to cut corners to save money. From buying generic to doing it yourself, there are endless creative possibilities to save. So, here is a gift idea for crafty penny pinchers – a handmade, no-sew fleece throw blanket!

All you need:

  • Two 2-yard pieces of fabric
  • Scissors

Start at your local craft or fabric store. Often, fabric stores will have great sales on fabrics sold by the yard so keep your eye out for great deals! You want to be looking for traditional fleece fabrics that maintain their form when cut. In other words, you want to make sure not to purchase the fleece fabric that will pill apart when it is cut.

You will need two pieces of fabric, each cut to two yards in length. Each piece will be approximately 48 inches wide. You can use two pieces of the same pattern fabric, mix and match patterns with solids, or mix patterns with other patterns for a unique and personalized touch!

Instructions:

  1. To begin, lay the first piece of fabric on a flat surface. (A large table or open floor space works great.) Carefully look at your pieces of fabric. Often, one side is considered to be the “good” side because the pattern is more vivid, or the fleece is softer. Make sure to lay the first piece out with the “good” side facing down, toward the flat surface. Place the second piece of fabric directly on top of the first, with the “good” side facing up, toward you. Trim around the edges, if necessary, to make sure both pieces are even on all sides.
  2. Next, use your index fingers to make the shape of a square at the corner of the fabric. This is where you will make your first two cuts, to remove a square block from the corner. When making any cuts, be sure to cut through both pieces of fleece. You will need to remove these equal sized squares from all four corners of the fabric.
  3. Proceed by making cuts along the edge of the fabric, approximately two and a half inches long and spaced approximately one inch apart. (You can use your index finger as a guide to the length of each cut as you cut along the edge of the fabric.) This will create a fringe around the outer edges of the fleece. Next, take each piece of fringe from the top layer of fabric and double knot it to its matching piece of fringe on the bottom layer. You will make these double knots around all of the edges, effectively tying the top layer to the bottom. (You should not have any loose pieces of fringe on any edge when you are done knotting.)
  4. When finished tying, you may need to pull each edge of the blanket to straighten it. To do so, hold each corner of the blanket and pull. You may hear some ripping sounds, which is okay. This will pull the knots to keep the blanket from curling into itself.

That is it! You have just made your first fleece fringe blanket. Now, you have a gift perfect for a wedding, birthday, baby shower, or any occasion!
