Stay organized with an easy DIY craft project. When it comes to building a customized tray for the inside of a box, all you need are a few inexpensive materials.

Decorative boxes are great to use around the house to hold the small accessories of everyday life. Remote controls, bills, office supplies, jewelry, make-up: they're all small items that can become disorganized and misplaced if not stored appropriately.

Some boxes come with interior trays and dividers that help keep things organized, while others are empty. The problem that can arise with empty ones is that they can end up becoming catch-alls for the flotsam and jetsam that find their way into them. To avoid this and to stay organized, build a customized interior. It's a very easy craft project and few materials are required.

Create a Customized Interior

To avoid becoming disorganized, try a simple craft project and make a customized, removable tray for the interior of the box. It can be designed to fit whatever is going to be contained inside.

Items needed (the amount of each will depend on the size of the box):

  • One decorative box
  • Pretty paper or fabric
  • Scissors
  • Craft knife
  • Craft glue
  • Foam core
  • Masking tape
  • Ribbon
  • 4 thumbtacks

How to build the interior:

  • Choose a box and the paper or fabric that will be used to dress up the inside. Wallpaper and gift wrap come in beautiful styles and colors. If it's going to be used for jewelry, velvet is an excellent option.
  • Cut the pieces of paper or fabric for the top, bottom, and all interior sides of the box. Apply them with craft glue and smooth out any bubbles.
  • Gather together the items that will be stored in the box and decide on a configuration for the bottom of the box, or for the removable tray.
  • Create a tray with pieces of foam core. Cut pieces of foam core with a sharp craft knife and assemble the pieces together using masking tape. Create the partitions to fit the items that have been assembled.
  • Take the same paper or fabric that was used to line the interior and cover the tray. Use the same methods as before.
  • Attach loops made of a complimentary decorative ribbon to make it easy to remove the tray. Attach them to the tray using flat thumbtacks.

This project can be done with any type of decorative box, whether it's new or antique. For antique box-lovers in particular it's a good idea since the interiors of aged document boxes and tea caddies are often tattered and damaged.

Uses for Decorative Boxes

There is no end to what these customized boxes can be used for: jewelry and watches; cameras, chargers and cables; baby keepsake's; photographs; bar accessories such as corkscrews, bottle openers, and drink umbrellas; and much more.

This is a simple project that shouldn't take more than an hour, and it will keep all those little items organized and in place.
