How to Carve a Pumpkin Using Pumpkin StencilsA Look at Ways to Use Free Online Pumpkin Carving Patterns
There's dozens of websites that offer free pumpkin carving stencils and pumpkin carving patterns, but how do you use them? And where can you find free pumpkin stencils?
In recent years, many websites have started offering free Halloween pumpkin carving stencils, pumpkin carving patterns and Jack-o-Lantern carving stencils. The problem? Many websites that offer free pumpkin carving stencils don't provide step-by-step directions on how to use them, leaving pumpkin carvers scratching their heads and wondering if they'll be lucky enough to finish the project in time for next Halloween. Step 1: Selecting the Pumpkin Carving Stencil or Pumpkin Carving PatternThe first step involves selecting the stencil or pattern that will be used as a guide for carving a pumpkin. There are dozens of pumpkin carving stencils available for free download on the internet, including variations of the traditional Jack-o-Lantern face, and some very un-Halloween animal pumpkin carving stencils, cartoon stencils, sports team logo pumpkin patterns, political pumpkin carving designs and just about anything else that the imagination can conjure up. When selecting a pumpkin carving stencil, pay attention to the intricacies of the design. A pumpkin carving stencil with lots of sharp corners and intricate shapes will take more patience, greater skill and a longer time to carve. The most complex pumpkin carving designs – typically called pumpkin carving patterns – don't just create a silhouette. With these more complex pumpkin carving patterns, the carver will create an effect of shading, which is accomplished by scraping or shaving away the outer layers of pumpkin skin in some areas. These more complex pumpkin designs can take hours to complete and perfect. Step 2: Preparing the Pumpkin Carving Stencil or PatternOnce this Halloween's pumpkin design is selected from one of the many pumpkin carving stencil or pumpkin carving pattern websites, print the design on normal computer paper. The image may need to be enlarged or reduced in size to accommodate the pumpkin. Print two copies of the pumpkin carving design. Next, trim off any extra paper around the edges and tape the pumpkin carving stencil onto the pumpkin. Some pleating of the paper may be required to make the flat design work with the curved surface. Take a step back and check the carving pattern for alignment, or risk a crooked Jack-o-Lantern carving. Position the pumpkin carving pattern a couple inches up from the bottom of the pumpkin to avoid exposing the candle flame or other pumpkin light. Step 3: Transferring the Pumpkin Carving Stencil onto the PumpkinUsing an awl, knife edge, tack or pin tool, and trace the outline of the pumpkin carving stencil onto the pumpkin by poking small holes in the pumpkin skin. The holes should be fairly close together – every 1/8 inch – to create a clear outline for the pumpkin carver. Only poke through the very outer layer of the pumpkin skin. If the pumpkin will be painted instead of carved, avoid puncturing the pumpkin skin. Instead, use the dull edge of a knife to depress the pumpkin skin beneath the outline of the pumpkin pattern. Step 4: Remove the Pumpkin Carving Stencil and Prepare to Carve!Remove the pattern from the pumpkin – this pattern can now be discarded. Keep the other print-out of the pumpkin carving pattern for referral, particularly if the pumpkin carving pattern is going to include "shading." Once the pattern is removed, use the tool to poke additional holes in any areas of the pumpkin that require some extra definition – it's better to have a clear line to follow when carving the pumpkin. Unclear guide lines can lead to pumpkin carving mistakes that can be difficult to remedy. Another hint? Coat the freshly-cut edges of the design with petroleum jelly to prevent drying and shriveling that occurs as the pumpkin dries, and kill bacteria that will rot the pumpkin by spraying the inside and outside with Lysol.
