Before you attempt to carve a pumpkin for the first time, consider the basic pumpkin carving tips below. After the Jack-O-Lantern has been carved, decide how to light the creation and learn how to make sure it stays fresh-looking throughout Halloween week.

How to Carve a Pumpkin for Halloween – Basic Pumpkin Carving Tips

There are several basic steps to pumpkin carving:

  1. Cut the lid of the pumpkin. Make sure the opening is large enough for an adult hand to reach in to clean it and place lighting inside.
  2. Scrape out the seeds and pulp.
  3. Trace or transfer a pattern onto the pumpkin.
  4. Cut out the pattern, poking the severed pieces out once loose.
  5. Carve the pumpkin’s flesh as necessary to achieve a certain look.
  6. Place a light (battery-powered or flame) inside to start the glow. See below for pros and cons of both illumination methods.

Beyond Pumpkin Carving – How to Light a Jack-O-Lantern

There are two basic ways to light a jack-o-lantern. One is to use a standard pillar candle, and the other is to use a battery-powered light. Both methods have benefits and drawbacks. A pillar candle can be blown out by a simple wind gust, but the flickering light casts a wonderfully eerie glow through the pumpkin design. A battery-powered light will be more reliable (even though the batteries may need to be replaced periodically), but this type of light is steady and doesn’t flicker.

For those who decide to use an actual candle to light a jack-o-lantern, the Pumpkin Lady website recommends cutting a chimney hole to let heat escape. To do this, light the candle and let it burn inside the pumpkin for a few minutes. Put out the candle and look inside the pumpkin. Where there is a burn mark, cut an approximate 1-inch hole.

How to Keep a Carved Pumpkin from Drying Out During Halloween Week

Pumpkin carving enthusiasts know that a pumpkin can only stay fresh looking for so many days on a front porch, exposed to the elements. The best way to ensure a plump, fresh-looking jack-o-lantern on Halloween night is to wait until a day or two before October 31st to carve the pumpkin and set it outside. If you decide to do this earlier in the week, remember to keep the carved pumpkin hydrated so it is as good looking as possible for the big day. Here are a few ways to retain moisture:

  • Place a damp towel over the pumpkin when not lit.
  • Wrap the pumpkin in plastic wrap when not lit.
  • Place the pumpkin in the refrigerator during off hours.
  • Rub petroleum jelly on any cut portions.

To combat severe dryness, consider soaking the pumpkin in water for several hours.
