There are many great inexpensive Halloween costumes that can be made out of a cardboard box; the sky is the limit. So when trying to think of a unique idea for a homemade costume this Halloween, get creative and look around the house for inspiration! If encountering an object around the house that's square or rectangular, consider whether it may make a funny Halloween costume! Some of the funniest Halloween costume ideas involve random household items.

Last-Minute Halloween Costume Idea Using a Box - A Present or Gift

A gift or present is a homemade Halloween costume that's quick and easy to make and it's a good last-minute costume idea since the necessary items can usually be found around the house.

Remove or fold-in the flaps on the open side of the box; this will be the bottom of the gift costume where the feet emerge. Then, the box should be covered with wrapping paper and accented with ribbon or a large bow. To complete this last-minute costume idea, cut a piece of cardboard into the shape of a large tag (approximately 6-8 inches long); cover it with a solid colored paper or paint it a solid color and fill out the tag or leave it empty, with just "To:" and "From:"

Notably, the "top" of the box — where the bow and tag are located — should be placed on the side of the box that will be covering the wearer's chest. The top of the box will need a large hole for the head, so it's not a good spot for the bow and tag. Cut holes for the arms and this last-minute Halloween costume is complete!

Cardboard Box Costumes for Couples or Siblings - Dice or UPS Man and Package

A box can be the basis of some pretty funny ideas for a homemade Halloween costume. One humorous costume idea for couples or siblings is the UPS man and package costume. One person will be the UPS delivery man (or woman) by dressing in all brown, ideally with a brown hat.

The other person who's participating in this couple's/siblings costume idea will dress up as a UPS package. this can be done using a large box that's actually been shipped, or a new UPS package can be created by spray painting a box "UPS brown." Then, write or paint the address on the box, paint on a large stamp and affix "fragile" stickers or re-create them with paint. The box costume can be worn in two ways: fold in the flaps and leave the bottom of the box open, cut a hole for the head and cut out arm holes; or keep your head under the box and only cut eye holes and arm holes.

Another great siblings or couples costume idea is a pair of dice. Spray paint two boxes white and paint black dots on each side. Wear all black or all white clothing.

Like the UPS box, there are two ways to wear the dice costumes: with head exposed by cutting a hole for the head (white Halloween face paint is recommended for this option) or keep your head inside the box and cut eye holes. Both designs require arm holes and the flaps on the bottom end of the box must be folded in or cut off entirely.

A Homemade Robot Halloween Costume Made From Cardboard Boxes

A robot is a popular Halloween costume idea for children. At least two boxes will be needed for a homemade robot costume: one for the body and one for the head. The boxes should be spray painted silver, and the bottom flaps removed or folded in. The head will require eye holes and the body will require arm holes.

An array of buttons can be painted or glued onto the robot costume. It's easy to get the robot costume to light up using battery powered stick-up lights that turn on/off by pressing the bulb dome. Cut holes where the lights will appear in the large cardboard box that's going to be used for the body. The holes should be large enough to allow most of the bulb dome to fit through from inside the box; the lights can be duct taped in place on the inside of the box. This creates light-up buttons on the homemade robot costume and they can be turned on and off by pressing the "button" on the outside of the costume!

"A Box of..." Halloween Costume

This Halloween costume idea using a box is one that's best suited to more artistic individuals who are capable of painting the box to look like a product. There are cereal boxes, boxes of cookies, boxes of instant mashed potatoes – if it comes in a box, it's fair game for a box costume and often, the more random the product, the more humorous the costume.
