Recently we looked at making a braid rug. Did you know you can use the same techniques to make an Easter basket?
Heirloom Easter baskets are made using fabric that means something to you. Your baby outgrows an outfit from that special aunt. It has a stain on it so you can't pass it on to another family member but you hate to get rid of it because of the sentiment. Your toddler loves his dinosaur pajamas. He would live in them if you allowed it. When he outgrows them they are too worn out to pass on but became a trademark for who he was at that phase of life. These are the fabrics to use in this Easter basket. The basket can be used for years and passed on with all of the stories to future generations.
Materials needed:
- Fabric scraps
- Needle
- Thread
- Bowl
- Scissors or rotary cutter
- Cut the fabric into 2” strips. Sew together as we did in prepping for a braid rug. We are going to assemble in the same fashion except we are going to use an upside down bowl as a mold and instead of beginning with a 2’ strip of braided fabric, we will be using a 2” piece of braid.Work around the core moving down the bowl as you go. Continue sewing as we did the braid rug. End off by tapering off the end and sewing it into the previous row.Braid an additional length to use as a handle. Attach to each side and add a bow made of fabric at intersection of handle and basket. Int he center of the bow you can embellish with Easter themed buttons. Line the inside of the basket with additional fabric scraps to be used instead of shredded grass.Add your chicks and bunnies and you are all set for Easter.
