How to Make a Puppy or Bunny Costume for Toddlers

Sep 18, 2008 Mary Welling-Bonney

Halloween is just around the corner. Here are a couple of ideas for making your child into the cutest little puppy or bunny on the block.

Puppy Costume

Materials:

  • Tan sleeper for the base
  • 5 brown felt squares
  • 2 tan felt squares
  • A headband.

Instructions:

  1. For the body, take 3 of the brown felt squares and cut odd shaped circles. Randomly hot glue them all over the sleeper.
  2. For the tail, take one of the brown felt squares and cut a triangle with a base of 8" and the two sides measuring 10" each. Fold the fabric in half so that it measures 4" x 10". Hot glue the long seam. Turn the fabric so that the seam is on the inside. Hot glue the tail to the seat of the sleeper.
  3. For the ears, take the two tan felt squares and cut four rectangles measuring 4" x 10". Lay two rectangles on top of each other and cut one end so that it is rounded. Repeat with the other two rectangles. Hot glue the pieces together at the seams. Using the remaining brown felt cut two pieces measuring 2 1/2" x 9". Using scissors round one end. These pieces are glued to the front of the ears lining up the straight end so that there is a border of tan all the way around. Glue the ears to the top of the headband so that they flop over the sides of the head.

Use makeup to paint on a brown nose and whiskers.

Bunny

Materials:

  • Pink sleeper for the base
  • 2 pink felt squares
  • 1 white felt square
  • 1 skein of fluffy white yarn.

Instructions:

  • For the ears, cut six long pointed ears from the 2 pink felt squares. To do this cut each felt square into three equal strips. Stack three strips on top of each other and taper one end to a point with your scissors. Repeat with the other three strips. Hot glue two ear pieces together. Hot glue a third piece onto the two. Cut an additional ear piece from the white felt making it one inch smaller all the way around. Hot glue this on top of the last pink piece. Repeat with the remaining pieces to make the second ear. Hot glue both ears to the top of the headband.
  • For the tail, take a piece of cardboard 4" x 8" and two ten inch pieces of the yarn. Tape the two yarn pieces across the long direction of the cardboard from end to end. Using the remaining yarn wrap the yarn around the cardboards 4" direction. When all of the yarn is gone pull up the two ten inch yarn pieces and tie tightly. Cut the yarn opposite the knot to release all loops from coiling the yarn. This will make one big pom pom. The pom pom is the tail. Pin or hot glue it to the seat of the sleeper.
  • Use makeup to paint on a pink nose and whiskers.
