How about making your child a giant can of their favorite beverage including the pull tab on top?

I am including the directions for a red can with a white design. You can alter it for the colors of your beverage but the design will remain the same.

Materials Needed:

  • Silver lame -1 yard
  • Red felt -1 yard
  • White felt -1 yard
  • 2- 18-inch embroidery hoops
  • Aluminum foil
  • Cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Rope -1 yard
  • Pencil
  • Gray turtleneck
  • Girl-silver or black tights or for a boy- black pants.
  • Paint and paint brush. (Paint should be the color of the child’s hair)

Take one of the embroidery hoops and use it as a guide for cutting out the silver lame. Cut the lame in a circle one inch larger than the hoop all the way around. Find the exact center of that circle and cut a hole approximately 8 “ across. This is where the head will be. Now cut from that hole one cut about four inches toward the outer edge of the circle. This is just to give plenty of room for the head to get through the hole.

Hot glue the lame to the embroidery hoop. Flip over the hoop so the fabric is on the table and the hoop is on the fabric. The cut you added to the lame will give you the direction, as this is the back of the costume. You are now going to hot glue the rope. Cut two pieces of rope so they will be shoulder straps to hold the costume from drooping down the child’s shoulders. They will go front to back on the left and front to back on the right. There will not be anything around the child’s neck.

Turn hoop back over with the fabric up. Beginning in the back, hot glue the red felt all the way around the hoop covering the edges of the lame as you go. The rope should be hidden on the inside. The length of the costume is going to be dependent on the size of the child. Cut away the bottom of the red felt that would make it too long. It should go to about knee length. You have not trimmed away the excess red felt from the side yet. First hot glue the bottom ring. This one will take a lot of abuse, so be extra thorough. Cut away excess red felt and hot glue the seam from top to bottom.

With the slit facing the back and using your child for a guide, cut armholes. Draw the beverage design on the white felt and cut out. Hot glue onto the red felt making sure to attach it to the front.

Hat-pull tab

Make a very basic crown by cutting a strip of cardboard that will measure around the Child's head. Now add two pieces of cardboard crisscrossing over the top of the head. Paint this the color of the Child's hair so it is not the accent.

Using your pencil, draw a pull-tab about 12 inches long and six to seven inches wide. Cut it out including the hole for the finger to grab. Gently roll up the cardboard to resemble a pull-tab as it curls when it is being pulled off the can. Hot glue this to the crown top. Cover the tab with foil. It would be easier to cover it with foil first but the glue would only be adhering the foil to the crown and it would break easily.

The costume is put on over the head. First head then arms. Both boys and girls can wear a gray turtleneck underneath. Girls can wear black or silver tights and boys can wear black pants. If unsure, always go black.
