Stepping stones for the garden are a great way to give mom a very personalized gift for Mother's Day.
There are a number of different options for creating stepping stones. The first option is to go purchase a stepping-stone kit at the store. This will give you the materials to make one or two stones. If you have never made stepping stones before this is a good way to start. It is quick and easy. The best part is that the kits come with the lettering sets you can use over and over again. The second option is to make your own stepping stones using cement from the hardware store. If you haven't worked much with cement you might be surprised to know there are different types. You can't can't just buy any cement. You will want a fine grade. This means that the pebbles in the concrete are very small. It will make a smoother surface. When you make your own stepping stone you will need a form to shape the cement in. You can build a frame with pieces of lumber, use a strong box, or even dig the shape into the ground and fill it with cement. Use a plastic trash bag to line the frame if you want it to be easier to remove. While the cement is still wet, you will need to add the lettering or design. You really need to plan this ahead of time. You can use letter presses like the ones that come with the kits or you can write into the cement. You don't have to use lettering. Instead you may want to use color. Make the stepping stones in different colors by adding tile pieces to make a mosaic. You can purchase ceramic tiles. Cover them with a towel and hammer them to get the shards the size you want. Use caution in working with the tile pieces as the edges are very sharp. You need to press them into the cement so that all of the edges are sealed and no one will cut their feet walking on the stone. You can have the children make their own for mom or grandma by giving them colored glass stones or marbles and letting them spell out their name. Or just let the children create their own design. See what other ideas the children have for materials to add. It is the kind of gift that will make them smile every time they walk through the garden and catch a glimpse of their special gifts.
