Frosty the Snowman is back! Building a snowman is great outdoor exercise for kids. Decorating is lots of fun for kids and lets them use their imaginations.

It’s time for Frosty the Snowman to make a come-back for the Holidays. Building a snowman is a great outdoor exercise for kids. Making a large snowman requires strength and it is better if two or three children work together. It's also a great holiday activity for the whole family. It seems easy, but there are a few tricks that help to build a sturdy snowman.

How to Build a Snowman

  1. Make a snowball. The snow must be damp enough to stick together. If you can make a snowball easily, you should be able to build a snowman. If the snow is dry and powdery it won’t stick together, and you will have to wait for another time to make a snowman.
  2. Put the snowball in the snow and pack more and more snow around it, keeping it as round as possible. When it is large enough to roll on the ground start rolling it in the snow.
  3. Roll the ball where the snow is fresh and even. Pack the snow down after each turn to make sure the ball is thick and strong. Turn the ball on different sides each time to make sure it stays round. Keep packing the snow down tight and trim it off if it gets out of shape.
  4. When the ball starts to get large, you may need your mom or dad’s help, unless you are a group of kids. When the ball is large enough to form the bottom of a snowman, roll it to the place that you want your snowman. Be sure that it is not so tall that you cannot reach the middle and head. Flatten the top just a little.
  5. Repeat steps one through four, but make the ball medium size. When it is ready to go on top of the first ball, lift it carefully and place it on the first ball. Pack snow between the first and second ball tightly so that they will stick together.
  6. Repeat the steps again, making the smallest ball, which will be the head. Lift it carefully on the snowman. Then comes the best part.

Decorating the Snowman

You can put a hat (make sure it can’t blow away) and scarf on the snowman. The traditional snowman has charcoal briquettes for eyes, a carrot for a nose and charcoals in a smile shape for the mouth.

Make a Unique Snowman

Use your imagination to make your snowman special. You can make an Oshaped mouth. You can put sticks in for arms and put a coat and mittens on Frosty. He can hold a broom. If you like, you can put tiny Holiday lights on Frosty, or buy glitter and other decorative items for the snowman. Get as creative as you can and make the best snowman in the neighborhood.

When Frosty Says “Goodbye”

Be sure to have someone take a picture of you with your snowman, because you know the Frosty the Snowman song. When a thaw comes, you will have to say “goodbye” to Frosty!
