Slate is a beautiful and natural material that is commonly used when decorating homes. Leftover pieces can be used for a variety of simple craft projects.

The use of slate tiles in interior design has become very popular in recent years. They're frequently used in kitchens for floors and backsplashes, and in bathrooms for floors, walls, and shower stalls. They're also commonly used in foyers. One of the great things about slate is that it's a natural material and can be used either indoors or out.

Slate Tile Characteristics

Slate tiles come in many sizes, shades, and textures. They're usually square and measure anywhere from 12 to 24 inches square. There are other sizes as well but these are the most common.

The thickness of slate varies but tiles are typically a quarter of an inch thick. They can however be larger and can get as big as three quarters of an inch thick.

Use Slate Tiles for Craft Projects

Slate tiles can also be used for a number of craft projects. Their smooth surface and natural beauty make them perfect for all sorts of things. Use any leftovers from your interior design projects or go out and purchase some specifically for crafts. They're readily available at home improvement stores and they tend to be less expensive than other craft items such as canvases.

Slate Wall Art

  • If you've used slate tiles in a room for the floors, or in a bathroom shower stall, use leftovers as wall art in the same room. Use peel and stick letters to write a message or use other appliqués to create a pleasing design. Make sure the tile is clean and dust-free before attaching items. You can also paint a simple design on slate tiles and hang them on the wall.

Make a Slate Trivet

  • This is one of the easiest slate craft projects around. Simply take a single slate tile and attach four adhesive felt tabs to the bottom. The tabs will keep the tile from scratching tables or counters. These homemade trivets look fantastic and will keep tables safe from hot dishes. Use them yourself or give them as gifts to friends who love to cook and entertain.

Mount House Numbers on Slate

  • Since slate works well outdoors consider using it to mount house numbers. Use a strong adhesive to mount metal numbers to a slate tile and hang it outside. Don't be limited by square tiles. Tiles with pieces broken off or jagged edges still look great when used for this project.

Use Slate Tiles as Makeshift Picture Frames

  • Mount you favorite photos on a smooth slate tile decoupage-style. Use decoupage glue to affix a photo to a tile, making sure the tile is clean and dry. Brush some of the glue over the tile and then place the photo where you would like it. Brush additional glue over top of the picture and when it dries you'll have a slight sheen over the photo and tile. Remember that once the photo is attached it can't be removed so you may want to make a copy of the photo and use it instead of the original.

When it comes to using slate tiles for craft projects use your imagination and get creative. There's no limit to the fun and pretty things you can make.
