We see the same Halloween costumes year after year: pirates, fairies, witches. And the past decade has led to yet another costume craze - Harry Potter Halloween costumes.
If you’re a Harry Potter aficionado and determined to show your support of the YA phenomenon, then why not try a fresh approach. This Professor Trelawney costume is unusual, easily recognizable and, best of all, simple to make. Materials
You may have all these materials lying around your house, or stuffed away in boxes from decades passed. But if you’re not interested in digging through your forgotten mementos, you can purchase all the clothing and jewellery at your local thrift store. For a wand, an 8 to 11 inch stick works fine. However, if you’d like to complete the costume with a more authentic looking wand, then you can order one online from the Noble Collection. Preparing the CostumeBecause Professor Trelawney’s character is so connected to nature, it’s important for her clothing to reflect that. Make sure each article of clothing is either an earthy green or brown color. When you’re tying the head scarf, make sure it starts just before your hairline and extends about 3 inches back. Adjust it so that the tassels hang down loosely on either side of your face. If the scarf won’t extend that far, have the tassels hanging down at least one side. You may need bobby pins to help secure the scarf in place. Here comes the fun part. Professor Trelawney’s hair is long and as frizzy as the day is long. (If your hair doesn’t reach passed your shoulders, you’ll need to invest in extensions or a light brown wig.) Beginning at the base of your hair, hairspray and then backcomb your hair all the way to the tip. Then hairspray each piece a second time. Work your way across your scalp, ending with the front. Lastly, add your jewellery. Professor Trelawney is known for wearing lots of necklaces of varying lengths. She doesn’t overcrowd her wrists with bangle bracelets, so just a few will do the trick. Playing the PartAn outfit is only half the costume. You’ve got to play the part as well, which isn’t hard with a character like Sybil Trelawney. Master the British accent, act erratic and thoughtful, and foretell untimely, tragic deaths for everyone you meet. It’s as simple as that. If you’re into props, you may want to carry around a crystal ball and impress your friends with an overdramatic fortune telling routine.
